Ford wagons USUALLY had the Mercury style pull out the back gears and were in the 3.90/4.10 and occasionally higher, i.e. 4.29(?). Now, the reason that I say usually is that I've in my ancient past have seen the standard front removable gears as well on OEM/stock autos. If you have either, parts availability except for bearings is slim and none 56 years later particularly since the 8" and 9" rear ends became "the standard" and often used as a replacement
I have a 1952-54 Ford shop manual the station wagon rear would have a 10 bolt rear cover also. Some of these had a 4:56 rear if the vehicle came with a 6 cyl and Overdrive.
Weren't those called Spicer rear ends?
Don
Aren't they Dana 44's? These were used a number of cars, including 55 and 56 Birds. Parts may be available from the TBird parts suppliers. I know that pinion seals are available.
it did come with a 6 cyl and overdrive so is this a good rear end or should i look for something else
In the long run you would probably be better off swapping it out for an 8" Ford which would have a much friendlier ratio for cruising and also parts availability. If you find one a little narrower that would be a plus also 52-54 Fords and Mercs have a very limited amount of wheel well room which severely limits what tires and wheels you can run.
