Not sure if this has been asked before and I know this is probably subjective to the person's opinion. With that being said, what is the loudest sounding Glasspack?
Thank you

the original thrush glasspacks in my opinion. Got 19 improper equipment tickets with them.:D can still find a set on ebay once in a while.
Shortest is loudest. Longest is quietest.
inside glasspacks are little dimple puch-outs which proturde into the tube center. If you orient the dimples to the front, quieter. To the rear, louder.
If you want LOUD go with Flowmaster 40's in the center of the pipe length in 2.5" to 3" pipe diameter, will rattle windows for a block. That said second vote on the Thrushes
I think the smitty's are after the glass is burn out and the thrushes was loud to
Thanks guys for the replys :D
I'll look into the smittys and thrush, what about CherryBomb?
cherry bombs are illegal in most states. i know that they are illegal here in va.
I have dual Smithy's on both of my cars and while they are loud I think the old Thrush's were louder. Smith'ys are more of a civilized loud.:LOL:
Smithy's are also much better sounding on a big block like my Olds 371. That's when they are at their peak in sweet hotrod sound. Not bad on a small block like in my 34, but not as good as on a big block car. Just my .02:cool:
Why dont you just run straight pipes? I can get cherry bombs here in fla.
Can't it would be illegal to run strate pipes. The thrush's, are they louder than the CherryBombs? What about Purple Hornies?
Thank you
Never have understood the fascination with overly loud pipes.... Nothing but a cop magnet IMO.... I much prefer a nice mellow sound with a good, deep tone. Nothing worse then road trippin' with pipes that are so loud you can't hear after you get where you're going.
If a car runs strong, it doesn't need loud pipes and a lumpy cam to advertise it....
Shane, are you trying to get back at some pesky neighbors?
I got some tubo 'glass pack' thrush muffs on the truck. They look like a traditional muffler. I swear to GOD it is louder in the cab than it is outside the truck.
Got THAT Right! Had em on two cars when I bought them + straight to the scrap heap after a week each. Drove me NUTS. The first set came off when a gal a block away came over to look over my 57. Said she heard me fire it up INSIDE her house a block away and just HAD to find out who had a car THAT loud and still sounded BAAAAAD + not junk like the local kids cars do. Too bad I am married, LOL.
I like Cherry Bombs, but get the long ones and aim the dimples towards the engine. Smitty's are much better in the long versions , but still get pretty loud as they burn out. Me? I like a mellow tone w no crackle. An X pipe goes a long way towards quieting most any of them down. I also mount them as far back as I can.
I like my Flowmaster 40's on my Nova.
Sure, your fillings vibrate out of your teeth,
but they glue back in.
Its a hot rod. Loud & offensive is all part of the fun, IMO.

Now that were talking about it, i bet it would be real easy to make some glasspacks in the garage, but then again you can pick em up pretty cheap.
I had some Warlock mufflers on my falcon and they were fairly loud, plus they had the cutout plate that could be removed for the straight through sound.
Thrush Magnum's ( with the perforated holes in the tube that seperates the glass from the exhaust flow ) are probably the quietest glasspacks. I really don't get the, gotta have a loud exhaust thing.. I built a muffler designed basicly like a thrush magnum, except w/o the glass packing, it was for a turbocharged car, but I tried it on a str8 6cyl N/A engine, and it was LOUD.. really nice sounding idle, but it got a bit too loud going down the road ( full exhaust, exit behind bumper, but still could not hear anything except the noise )
Flowmasters are mufflers, but Glasspacks are mufflers too
Hmmmmmm. Got to differ with you on a couple points....Loud and offensive may be fun, but it ceases to be fun when public opinion demands that cops again start cracking down on loud and offensive pipes....then all of us Hot Rodders are considered to have loud and offensive cars, and we all get a whole lot of hassles because of it.....
I got in this Hot Rodding stuff long enough ago to remember what it was like to be considered the "bad guys" of the road. Putting up with constant attention from the cops, many towns not wanting to host any Hot Rod events or even have any Hot Rods in town.... Many, many rodders fought long and hard to bring the image of Hot Rodding up to it's present level from the days when we were considered outlaws and trouble makers. Yeah, having fun in a Hot Rod is great, guilty as charged!!! But, I try not to do it in an area where people don't appreciate it....Loud pipes rapping off on a Saturday night in a resedential area does little to improve the public's view of Hot Rodding.... Having fun, making a bit of noise, and a burn out or two is great fun.....when it's done in the right place and at the right time. I just really hope that loud and offensive pipes don't become just one more reason for people to want to do away with Hot Rods.......
DITTO! WE finally got the local gendarm to leave us alone. The glass packs of the sixties were a huge setback w street squrrels in Grandma's cast off Dodge or Chevy 4dr sedan blasting away at 2 am in residential area's. We ALL got pulled over for about 5-10 years until the advent of turbo's. Now w the nostalgia thing in full swing they are back and those same lind of guys are blasting away AGAIN w the pipes crackling.(Witness those POS Civics and PU's w 4" boom tubes) :(
MINE :eek:, and I am throwing the damned things away this week. After a 550 mile round trip this past week-end to Myrtle Beach, SC, I've had enough!

I vote the old Thrush glass packs or cherry bombs as well but IMO Smittys are the best sounding. As for Flowmasters, they may sound nice but flow is horrible and they rust quickly from the inside out. That doesn't mean I dont like them, I'm just warning you on the cons of the Flowmasters.
On a related subject, when did it finally become ok to run simply headers with no mufflers or tailpipes? I'm running them on my T, in fact the whole family is (:D) and we cruise right on by cops with nary a glance. Mine is relatively tame with baffles, but Don's sounds like a fueler. I started wondering about this at Billetproof because every other car is now running zoomies or lakes headers, or some similar "right out of the exhaust port" setup. 10 years ago I would have been afraid to run these, but anymore it seems so very common.
I like it! :D:D

The ski resort I work at holds the Annual WDST- Radio Woodstock Mountain Jam.. so we attract the hippie crowd for a weekend with original members from bands like The Grateful Dead, The Allman brothers, etc... and the drugs come too.. the drug charges get so severe that they cannot keep up with putting them in jail.. so there told to sthttp://www.hotrodders.com/ep out of line ( there searched b4 entering the grounds ) and get rid of the stuff, and eventually it gets so bad, they confiscate the weed and only bust them for the hard drugs... I'd guess it's around the same idea with the open headders
i think the cherry bombs are quite and mellow
I kinda agree, I did a you tube search for CherryBomb Glasspacks and they sounded quite to me as well
NCHardhat, where exactly in NC are you located?
I am just south of Charlotte.
