The 48 sounds like a big project. Dont push yourself too much on it or else you will get burnt out and sell it most likely. As you may know already, these things take lots of time to build and tear down and rebuild again for paint...
I have a 48 Chevy coupe that I bought when I was in high school around 6 years ago I guess it was. I have not even touched the thing really. I stored all the parts under the house and kept buying more and more old cars and trucks and none are finished. I have started working on one at a time because if not you get burnt out on them and you only have so much money and so much time in a day to work on them.
With the 48 it sounds like if it's in a ditch, the frame is probably rotted. If not then I would suggestion a MII or Camaro sub frame job on it. I put a 79 Z28 front sub on mine and in the end it will be cheaper than fixing the original brakes and much safer. Safety is key in building these old cars. Start with gathering all the parts you can such as frame, brakes, suspension, engine, transmission, rear end, driveshaft, gauges, etc. Pretty much everything you need to get it driving... Then start assembly which will take a while to get right. Put the car together, get it driving, drive it for a while and work out the bugs. Then you can tear it down and do your body work and chrome parts, etc. If your like me then you will build the car/truck 3 times and then finally tear it down for paint. I dont care about looks, I care about taking care of rust and get the thing running reliably.
This may all sound simple but I pretty much skipped a lot of stuff and gave a basic explaination of what will need to be done. You dont have to do it in these steps, I'm just throwing suggestions out there.
Let me know if there are any parts you need for the car, I may have some things laying around such as dash, and small parts.
