which 6? 292,300 or 225

I'v always wanted to build up a inline six cylinder engine and was wondering which engine would be the best to go with. Chevy has the 292, Ford the 300, and Mopar the 225 slant six. On these six cylinder engines I know you don't want to rev these engines to high due to the fact that they have longer crank and cam than the V-8's, and most have only 4 main bearings retaining the crank. Clifford has alot of parts needed to rebuild and update these engines, but if you had to do, what would be your choice?

I believe all three of your sixes of choice are seven main bearing engines. The Ford 300 has the shortest stroke/largest bore, and can stand more RPM than the others. The slant 6 is short stroke, too, but not much for cubes. The 230 Chev has been known to rev, it's a short stroke job. My choice would be the Ford first, then the SS, with the GMC last,even though it's a torquer.

I was thinking th same way as I had a ford with th 300 engine and it had pretty good torque and is the largest CI of the three. I think the 225 slant six mopar was a four main bearing engine, but I could be wrong.

300 is one of my favorite engies of all. If you could make it sound as good as a V* it might be my favorite but there's just no way a 6 banger will ever sound as good as a V8.

Seems to me I had a 250 in a maverick, and it was one torque-y critter.

Different strokes for different folks. To my ear, there is nothing that sounds as good as a 6 with duals and 36" glasspaks.

I think a dressed up vintage flathead six with dual carbs and lots of chrome looks FAR OUT! But for practical purposes I'd have to say the Furd 300.

I don't know about the 6's not sounding like a V-8. In high school we split the manifold of a 235 engine and ran straight pipes and it sounded pretty good.

Everyday I think I should get started with the swap but I just can't bring myself to give up the sweet sound of my 390 through turbos for the anemic raspy buzz of a six. Sorry. The 300 will get settled in somewhere, 268 Comp cam, dp offy with a 390 Holley, ported head. I have headers but will probably run the efi manifolds, through quiet mufflers.

They have the aftermarket crossflow head for the Ford 250, plus I guess the Aussies have it fuel injected and with an aluminum head too. Lots of good pieces for one of those.

Chevy 37, you're right, the slant has four mains. Drove lots of them, just never had to tear one down! They're like the battery bunny!

All the sixes I ever messed with were a couple of 235s, and I always liked them; they have a certain "feel" to them, both in their response and their sound.
The company I worked for used Dodges and Plymouths for fleet utility cars, and a few of the smaller pickups; they all had the slant six in them, and when maintained right, they were very durable, if a bit anemic in their stock form, but they got used by every Joe and Jane who needed a set of wheels, and worked well. Now, the big Ford, that is an engine. I worked a job with a guy who built Fords exclusively, mostly off road and 4x pickups. He had a beauiful mid to late seventies 4x that had one of the 42? engines, and it was a runner. He changed that thing out for a 300 he'd built, and it was even better performing out in the country we worked in. It had a four barrel on a Clifford manifold, a cam that was definitely not stock, but was not real lopey, either, and a set of headers. The exhaust was the same he'd used on the 42? from ahead of the mufflers, back, a 2 - 3/4 inch system which was big for those days; it sounded very good, a really throaty rumble and growl, rather than the customary buzz and rap of a smaller piped six.
