Opinion on air cleaners anyone?

Now that the engine is together I think I want a little more nostalgic look for it when it goes in the 37. I picked up a set of individual air cleaners for it and am really kind of undecided now, but am leaning to the 6 individual units.

The 6 pac lid and filter won't go to waste if I do this as I think it looks real good on the dual quad mockup engine that will be turned into a display engine in the new shop office. I thru an old wrinkle finish lid I had on it for now to match the valve covers but eventually the valve covers will be sent for chrome and the chrome lid will go back on.

So what do you guys think?

I like the first pic, to me the six small ones make the top look a little inadequate compared to the rest of the big motor.

I like the six air cleaners. It is a classic look, makes the engine look more extreme, and draws attention to the multi carbs, instead of hiding them.

Since it is going on a very early truck, they seem fitting.

I am leaning towards the 6 set up.

I like the "6" setup...just wish they had a little bit more height to them.

Yep, I like the six individual ones too. Another thought, how about 6 individual scoops? I know they don't filter worth a d***, but they sure look great! :D :D Besides, occasional rain down the carbs tends to remove carbon deposits. :D

i like the six also. really shows off a great engine.

The six individual ones are kind of the "standard" for a '50s look, and do point up the presence of the six carbs, though personally I like the Stellings & Hellings helmet style better. These little guys are notorious for poor air flow though, and the six pack assembly probably breathes better. A K&N (or quality clone) cotton filter element will help with airflow and can be had for both the big and small housings. Then there's the scoop type that Gastrick has on his hemi in the other thread going on putting a hemi in a deuce. They also make nice little disc shaped filters that fit at the base of those......that would give you more of a competition look (think Garlits carbed engines of the mid '50s)

yes i like them more just was digging thru the old photos to find the 6 set up on the old hemi with them on it

Form follows function. I don't see functionality in either of these setups, but the single oval would do a much better job than the individual pots in my opinion. I think you need as much filtering area as you can see at the top of photo 3, in the background, on another motor. I'd use the oval design with a taller filter element or if a taller element isn't available, I'd stack two of them together with longer studs.

id go with the big one with a k&n filter lid on top then you have 2x the filtering area.

Thanks for all the comments so far. I’ve pretty much made my mind up to run the 6 individual units.

Tech and Dave and gasser all bring up very valid points aobut filtration. It’s kind of funny I normally caution about using the small ones on Tri Power setups because the one on the primary carb can often act like a choke at higher RPM before the end carbs open up.

With the overbore this engine is only 341 CIs and I don't really envision any really long trips in dusty conditions. I’m hoping where with my setup has two primary carbs and filters it won’t be a problem. If it is I guess I’m back to the big cleaner.

I’ve been drooling over Gastrick’s setup since yesterday, I just don’t know how the scoops would look on the larger Rochesters.
