YOu could add one and depending on the quality it would not hinder the flow enough to have any efffect.
Generally due to the size of the valves in a mechanical pump beinge able to pass even rather large pieces of crap (should there be any in the system) it really doesn't matter if the filter is before or after the pump.
Shouldn't be a problem but don't expect to see it full and wonder why it isn't.
Since the mech pump will pass relatively large contaminants it makes sense to me to place the filter after the pump.

Well the main reason is so I don’t have a fuel filter in the Q-Jet, this guy gave me a q-jet from a 1967-67 396 but striped out the filter part and sealed it up with epoxy. I bent all my steel line so it is just 1 pc and don’t want to cut it for a filter.
