I have a real nice clean full rotiss GT500 clone and am finishing off odds and ends for way too much money but was wondering what verybody thinks about value of car with existing new crate stroked 302 with everything on it or find and drop in a date coded 428PI? I guess it's just another way to burn money if you have to have it or is it a goos investment?
Not going to be much of a 500 clone with a Windsor in it.... I'd patiently go shopping for a 428CJ, don't really know if a correct date coded block would really matter much in a clone.....
These are my thoughts exactly unless you buy a car to be a driver. I bought it to be a fast driver/investment/reason for my wife to scream at me. Thanks.
There's a couple ways you can go to give it the big block treatment.
Yes, you could hunt for a correctly date coded 428 block, but as Dave pointed out, I don't think it will add as much value to a clone as compared to a "real" Shelby 500. If you know where to get any 428 for a reasonable price, go with that. If you can't find a 428 you can always build your own by finding a 360/390 block that can safely handle the 0.080" overbore and dropping in a 428 rotating assembly. If you can't find any suitable blocks to do the 0.080" overbore, the 428 rotating assembly will still give you a nice torquey 410.
If it's just the look of having a big block under the hood you're after, you can always just go with a 390 that looks just like a 428.
i don't mind keeping the existing built small block but I thought if you could find a nice 428 for 5-7k it would be a good adder to the car for investment.
I believe the new heads from John Kaase are ready for retail..........they are original style boss heads ,made from aluminum,that fit a stock 460 block..........nuthin like a Big block Boss engine to up the value of anything it is installed in.

Honestly unless your hung up on the date code correct thing...... I'd think about a FE 427 stroker if your looking to drop $5-7k into a engine. Bigger bore and more cubes!! You can still find a decent sideoiler block for under $3k. I've been seeing them in the $2500 range still std bore. Cleanup at .017. Most have a window repair but done right will be fine. You can buy a 4.125, 4.250 or stroker kit ready to go for $2k. Or a stock steel 427 crank or 428 iron crank, rods and pistons for a little less. If you don't mind iron heads you can find 427 and CJ heads fairly priced. Or stock aluminum Edels you can cleanup and port match. $1500. So for the same or little more money for the 428 you can build yourself a nice 427. Just look for the right deal. I also saw a complete 63 or 64 427 rebuilt for $7500. And that came with a set of old oem cast headers you can sell off for $600-1000 depending on which they are. 482" stroker would be a little more fun than a 428. Just thinkin out load here. If your looking for something to burn money on and piss off the wife that's the way to go!!! Believe me!! But the prices the 428's are these days you can find a 427 for about the same money. Drive it with the 302 stroker till you have everything ready and then do the swap.
