What is this strange noise???

....In my '32 Ford with a small block Chev motor I have a REALLY strange noise. Is sounds like a muffler rattling but it only happens when the motor is idling or going really slow in forward or reverse {like 1 or 2 MPR or less}. I put it up on a rack today & couldn't find anything lose {or at least what I did find that was lose I tightened & it still rattles}. It sounds like it's coming from the engine & it's not lose headers. The car runs REALLY strong so whatever it is, it's not hurting the performance any. Any ideas??? THANKS ;) Bill

Are you using chambered mufflers or a straight through design? I have seen some of the inside welds come lose creating a rattle. Usually a tap with a rubber or dead blow hammer on the muffler will tell you if this is what it could be or not.

Could be a small crack in the flex plate. They can drive you crazy, until they get worse and more obvious. I had one that clicked like that for a year or so, only found it when I pulled the engine for an unrelated failure.

:D Could be muffler baffles, push up on the bottom of the muffler, if it stops "rattling" that's the problem!

Certainly is some resonance tone oddity somewhere in the exhaust system.

Or at least try to spell it: is it a raaaatttttaaaattttturg sound? or more of a grrrrarrrarrrarrrarrra thing?:LOL:

Might be those Chevy and Ford parts fighting with each other....well it might be!! Ok I'm just guessing.....but it might be!!

A buddy of mine had a strange noise. He had just put a new engine in his 34' Chevy. We had gone to the street rod nationals in Bakersfield and he trailered the rod home. He lifted the car, search underneath for anything loose. Tried replacing the starter. Then his son noticed a gap between the block and bellhousing. It was only on the starter side. Tightened the bellhousing bolts and everything was fine.

Could be any number of things, but if you have an automotive style stethoscope or a length of wooden broom handle you should be able to isolate where the noise is coming from.

muffler bearings need to be repacked.
