Spools on the street

Anyone ever run a spool on the street? I hear its tough, but I have a very light s-10 so I think I could get away with it. Sees very limited street duty, and a few more than that, 1/4 miles trips.

They don't work worth a hoot on the street. Tires are always fighting each other around a corner and a spool puts a terrible push in the car when going around a curve. Don't even want to talk about all the excitement if you happen to be out on a night when the streets are wet!!!! A light car would only serve to compound the difficulties on the street, with a heavy car there's enough weight to overcome some of the push that the spool creates....

Very good advice........and it is hard on parts too, like axles.

mine has a spool and it gets more street time then 1/4 mile time. it is for sure not a good idea. mine only has one because i bought it that way, and it is a donar car for my project so i will keep it for now. but if you have a posi now do not change it. my car broke down once and i could not push it off the road into a parking lot, as soon as you deviate from a straight line the rear wheels lock up from one wanting to turn faster then the other.

I have run one in the past.
You really have to take corners slow and wide and it is nice if there is some sand on the corners to make the wheels slip a little.

I have a spool in my S10 (tubed 9 inch 350/350) and it's pain in the rear to drive :LOL: I will change it this winter.

I also have a spool in my 51 Chevy deluxe and I want to take it, to me it sucks on the street, can always hear the tires when making turns and have to them nice, wide, and slow

Yup...I've got a spool in my '40 chevy race car...trying to push your car in and out of the garage and trying to make turns is a pain in the ass...I can only imagine that it would eat up your tires on the street....spools are made to go straight line!!

Sounds like your vehicle would be a good candidate for a Detroit Locker. Not as good on the street as a limited slip, but much better than a spool. It would be a good compromise as it would work quite nicely on the strip.
