Barn Find.

OK here is the scoope.. There is a old abandoned farm that the local kids like to go to because they say its haunted.. Every town has one.. This one is grown up and it takes a 4wd truck to get to it.. On the property however is a old barn and in this barn is like 6 old cars . I was told that they all look around 30's-40's that they all have big fenders and so on.. lol Thats how the kid described them.. He says there all in awesome shape like they where driven there and parked..I was also told I dont know how true this is that the house was seized by the gov. Regaurdless Im going to take a trip out there I think this weekend and have a look myself.. If its worth while whats the best way to go about this ? I dont want to up and just steal the cars I would like to obtain them legally..

Find out who currently owns the property. SOMEONE owns it, be it a bank or private owner. I know it is tempting to just assume no one wants the stuff, and maybe that is the case, but you have to make sure you get permission from the legal owner to remove anything. Otherwise it is known as car theft! :eek: :eek:

Once you determine that, try to strike a deal..........you might even get lucky and they will be happy to have the stuff removed. BTW, little tip. Don't go to see the owner driving your Rolls Royce, and dress down a little. :rolleyes: :LOL: :LOL:


Also, there have been instances where a person spends lots of money fixing up some "abandoned" car, and later on the real owner drives up and leaves with his newly restored car.

Always a good story, but remember that even going to look at the cars is trespassing.... A check at the court house on the county plat map will reveal the name of the land owner... I'd suggest getting permission first....

If I go out there I'll take pics..

In NY, you go to the county property tax office, and ither tell them a street address, or look at the tax maps, after that you can find the owner, and all info about the property too ( acerage, buildings/ sizes, assessed value ect... )

I have a 4 whl dr that will move in and out quick for its size . Those BMG rounds will catch up though LOL.

My grandma past 1 1/2 years ago, she lived on what was the original homestead, family been there since 1887. My sis and I own the property, no farm left, all homes around us. Well, nobody lives there, but we keep it up, a two story old house and big old barn are left. Why am I telling you this, because just last week I chased a guy 20 minutes through county roads and caught him, the cops finally got there and jailed him. He said he thought the place was abandoned. That's the 4th person who's day I ruined. It's very simple, it's not your property, it's not ok to just look, period. Do it the right way and you may be rewarded.

Do it the right way I might be rewarded..? There is no right way unless I buy the property and hope like hell there is a gold mine worth of cars there..? How r u to explain ? Hey I was looking at the property because I was kind of looking for a old fixer upper farm house.. I noticed some old cars there wanna sell them? Thats as good as it gets from me.. I a friend of mine back in High school his dad use to go " barn hunting" They would go all over the state on tips or just stumble across old barns and just take a peak.. If any one asked whatcha doin he would explain..Then if there was something worth a hoot he would track down the owner of the land and buy the car off of him to restore and sell.

I agree with 68RATVT on this one, find out who the owner is and ask permission first. Before anything. I live in a rural area, and if I see anyone sneaking around I investigate with a rifle in my hand.
There's some goodies in my sheds, they're mine and I intend to keep them.
When I told the local Plod what I do, I demonstrated with a imaginary rifle: "There will be a warning shot over their heads," (rifle paralel to the ground,) "Then one aimed at them." (rifle pointed sky-ward.)
The cop looked me in the eye and said: "So long as there's two shots."
Don't mess with someone elses property. You could live to regret it. Or you might not.

You must be one of them city boys.

I grew up on a farm in Ill. Believe me there is no such thing as an abandoned farm....unattended maybe, but not abandoned.

Go to the nearest occupied farm and I can guarantee you they will know who's farm it is and the owner will know exactly what is in the barn. Track down the owner BEFORE you go poking around......chances are you will be told there not for sale but who knows you may get lucky. It may be a wasted trip but it beats sitting in jail which is where you'll be if someone calls the cops and your there without permission.

Chances of striking a deal on the car(s) are a lot more remote if you pi$$ off the owner by him finding out you were out there without permission.

Alright maybe my posts have came off the wrong way.. My intentions where this go out to the property if there is a no trespassing sign thats fine.. If there isnt Ill go up on the property and see if I can find out who the owner is.. If needed go to the nieghboring but while on the property take a quick peak with out walking into the wide open half fallen down barn just to see if its worth my time..Im not a thief I dont intend to be obnoxious about this..

As for the gun issues GUNS ARE FOR PUSSIES . It gets no simplier then that.. I repoed cars for 4 years before the economy went sour because of the war. I covered the entire state from Chicago to STl and down to puducah ky.. Nothing pisses me off more then a coward with a gun..All of you might think its legal to point a gun at a man for trespassing but its not. Xspecially when no crime is being commited.. Trespassing isnt a punishable crime unless done numerous times with a order signed.. The whole story which is probally bs is that years ago there son hung himself in a tree out on that farm afterwards the family moved out.. The farm hasnt been lived on since just a bunch of dumbass kids going out there to party and some one got caught at some point in time with a meth lab.. I dont intend on disturbing anything and I do intend on contacting the owner but I want to make sure its even worth going though all the trouble to do so first..

Sorry it upsets you... A lot of us get upset with people who think they have to swear to get their point across... As to the other, you want to trespass, go trespass.... The law is the law. Even if you were a repo man.....

The farm may not have been lived on for years....that's a moot point.

The days of the small family farms of 180-260 acres are long gone (they were ending by the late 60's). Most of the small farms have either been sold to bigger farms or are leased to another farmer to farm. In many cases if the old out buildings were still in decent shape they were/are left standing for storage of equipment and stuff they wanted people TO KEEP OUT OF.

Good example is my self back about 79 or so. I was on orders to go to Panama for 2 years. A neighbor very kindly allowed me to park my 2 cars (V8 Pinto and a V8 Vega) in a shed he had on his property. Nobody was living in the farmhouse at the time. Much like the property I suspect you are going to go look at the place was still farmed and the neighbors keep an eye on the place. Had a stranger come on to the property....especially if he started hauling stuff off, at the minimum he would have gone to jail.

I still have friends and family back in that area. Some things are stored for sentimental reasons other because the OWNER feel they have value. People with the attitude you appear to have........ your "rights" as a curious individual outweighing the legal owners property rights ......can really upset the owner of the property.

I'm not saying not to go check it out (wild goose chases can be fun). DO IT THE RIGHT WAY. Get permission first. You may get told no.....if you do it's probably because someone in the past has already done what you are planning on and ruined it everybody else.

I understand.. Its there for a reason wether or not its favoring me or not isnt the issue.. In harrisburgh Il we came across a trailer and a half torn down barn with a 66 impala.. Pulled up on the property in a tow truck because we where in the area repoing and checked it out and went next door. The guy owned it and sold it to my friend.. My boss use to go around when work was slow because we where out of Moweaqua a small town and use to drive around and pull up to places that had cars in pastures and hanging out of barns and asked if they wanted them hauled off for free.. Alot of the times they would and he would go crush them and collect wieght off of them.. I know this being a car forum nobody on here would apperciate anyone snooping around about old cars in bars or in yards .. But some people dont care about cars and just assume to have them hauled off..

No I didnt fight hand to hand.. LOL I served in the first wave of Afganastan .. I just feel in the us pulling a gun on a unarmed man and shooting shots at him is weak.. Its a differnt story if he s threat to your friends or family.... Ive just had alot of run ins with guns with papers in hand ..

It would be differnt if it was a hood rat holding a gun sideways but country boys hunt and have alot better shot at moving targets.. I woudln't go to a abondoned farm at night , going in daylight make alot off noise and swing the camera maybe ole farm boy has since enough to yell out then react. Heck for me all it takes is a mangy ole farm dog and im gone LOL .My family is from Tennessee and Alabama i see guns all the time . I do believe in protection inside the 4 walls of your dwelling . My grandpa used to lay in wait for the game warden on his property,the guy was tryin to be slick ,by not visibly wearing his uniform,but dreesing just like a hunter/old boy.
He had some "special" long brass shells loaded with rock salt,.................you try quoting the law to a old codger with a auto browing 12 guage spewin rock salt at ya.....by the way the local judge said he did no wrong,not sure the warded felt that way with all the rock salt in his petunia.
It taught me a lesson,do not go on someones property without permission.
Here is the sign on my property in the city.........no tresspassing

Some of the best cars my father has owned where barn finds. My dad is a bit of a talker, and knows just about everyone who knows everyone else. I suggest you head over to the coffee shop and ask a few questions. There has to be someone that knows something. The other thing is look for records at the town hall, or even library. Who knows you might end up with a 32 Packard or a 40 Ford Truck. The best one my dad found was a 56 Packard 400. It needed new interior but other than that the car was mint. It was meaner looking than the Chevies of that era, and more put togeather than a Cadilac:cool: . Lipstick pink with an white top and bottom, gorgeous chrome. Makes my heart hurt thinking about it.

Try and find the owner.

Uh No not by far.. Banks slowed up there repos started wanting to work out there un paid debts.. Auctions slowed down less buyers ...

Having grown up in White county Illinois and still owning property there. If you are snooping around my barn there are three things you will meet before me:
(1) Hungry coon hound. :eek:
(2) Ill tempered billy goat. :eek:
(3) Angus bull. :CRY:
Then there is me, most of the time I'm calm but then there is the moody side.. or is it sporting :LOL:
Rural areas are prone to Meth labs. You have to be very careful that you do not get shot on your own property..

I don't know about 217, but I'm one of the ex-military who is against the war. It's a terrible waste of human lives and tax payer dollars that will ultimately accomplish nothing. My feathers do get ruffled when this country gets involved in another war that can't be won!!!!
