Your memory isn't too bad. Without the manifold you just need to run bolts into the cylinder head where the manifold would bolt, one in one of the front "corners", and one in the alternate rear. A length of sufficiently stout chain should work as a sling. If the hook on your hoist (or "cherry picker") doesn't swivel, the engine may want to "rotate" on the hook center as you lift, so just be aware and keep pressure on to keep it from hanging up on the way out. If you intend to lift out the trans connected to the engine, just make sure you place the hook farther back to help center the load. There are slings that have a screw mechanism in them that allows you to tilt the load as you go, but in tight confines they tend to hit the firewall causing both damage, and interfering with the lift.

Also, with the lifter valley wide open now you should tape a piece of cardboard or thin metal over it to keep out contaminants........even if you intend to tear it down. No sense causing more work.
