Whats the way to go? Lead? Fiberglass? Kitty Hair? I know they used to use lead on "Lead Sleds", And i know its not that safe, but does anyone use this anymore?
I really dont want to dissasemble everything and i dont have access to a welder right now, so i need some suggestions on how to do this.
If you're planning to fill the seams without welding them, forget it. They'll just crack out again and look like s**t!
Were you planning on inhaling or drinking the lead? I'm leading the cab on my 1-ton right now. I must tell you, there are other compounds and chemicals that will mess a person up worse than the lead paste that is used for these kind of projects.
How long will it be before the lead cracks and pushes out the paint though?
I have a 71 ford f100 and i want to make the seam on the side of the bed above the style line, the seam on the hood above the F-O-R-D, and the cab where its welded together, go away. Were do you get lead paste? Or could you just melt the lead onto the body with a blowtorch?
Rosebud is the flame you will wish to use. The lead compound is available from welding shops and suppliers to fab shops such as sign shops and metal fabricators, you know, artsy kind of guys who buy from them. The paste is what you will be working with. when the metal is prepared and ready, you will use a "soldering" technic using the rosebud flame and not an iron type of heating element. Quite simple really, just time consuming.
well, i have tons of time right now (summer, no school). and im all for simple. looks like thats the road im gonna take, hopefully i dont end up at Sh!t creek.
If you don't have a welder, find somebody who can weld it for you. No matter how long it lasts, you will be mad when it fails.
At that time, you will not only have to repeat most of the work you've already done, but you will also have to remove all of the fiberglass or lead, the finish bodywork, and the paint, so it is almost twice the work you did the first time!
Do it right, and never worry about it again.
The real problem is the fumes that come off the lead when you're heating it. Personally, I'd never use it except with a proper mask. You're body never eliminates lead. Whatever you take in, stays in.Quote:

Only "Old Farts" that have done it forever would not wear a mask. or respirator to deludge the fumes. If a person of average intelligence reads that quote, they will understand why I was asking it. I don't throw general answers out there for the lurkers and "free grabber's" to just keep trucking along with no regard. I ask to get the thought process going and to dig into the subject matter at hand. Yeah, I'm taking offense to this, I read the partial quote of my earlier post and see firey darts coming my way. Yeah, maybe I assume he would think about a mask. But I don't assume. It's like the manufacturer of your product you purchased assumes you read the directions. Maybe I'm from the old school where a question on my part is supposed to bring out a thought process or question from the questionaire (or student that asked the question). I wish all those who come to ask to also think with common sense. By the way, I'm always in high gear or I fall asleep. I did not mean to offend, just raise a solid thought process so the people whom ask a about a subject that they either don't know or have experienced, to look at the process and think for the good of their health and nice finish to the project. Well, I switched mine to a steel grille out of a '67....Welded it on just fine, thank you..... But hey, don't waste anytime listening to any of us from the been there, done that crowd!!!!!!! I know what you mean on those body lines on these piece of junk trucks, my 66 F100 has them on the bed and roof of the cab, I will be doing the same thing. Two part seam sealer is another solution but again, it may crack a few years down the road but it IS better than a plain one part in the tube sealer.
