New pinion and ring installation

The chart that came with these gears is really confusing ,if you know a little about photography and study the angles and which side is the inside of ring and which side is the outside ,you will notice the three pics dont match:LOL:
I understand completely what you are exsplaining Denny ,I am just trying to understand the books terminology:LOL:
The left side of the coast pic is the inner ring ,the left side of the pic of the drive side is the ouside of ring,Then if you look at the hand drawing to the far left, it is drawn transposed ,basically if you look thru the sheet from the back of the drawing up against a light its then correct:eek: {like the old zerox 180 degreed everything it printed ,or transposed}
Which is completely confusing :o

Soo just to make sure..... The toe is the inner part of the ring,I am currently too far on the heel.In order to make the pattern move to the inner part of the ring,the pinion needs to travel closer to the back of the truck{more pinion shim}?
Thnx for the pics Denny,the ones from Richmond were lacking to say the least:mad: I now have a good reference of which side of the ring teeth are drive and coast ,what the correct gear mitre should look like,and how to achieve this.
Now I just need to remove and re-install:3dSMILE: Then start the checks over:LOL:

PATTERN MOVEMENTS SUMMARIZED
...Pinion shims usually must be moved in .003 of an inch increments to notice a pattern change. If a pattern is heavy toe subtract shims. If a pattern is heavy heel add shims.
(1) Decreasing backlash moves the ring gear closer to the pinion.

Drive pattern (convex side of gear) moves slightly lower and toward the toe.

Coast pattern (concave side of gear) moves lower and toward the toe

A little less backlash and a thicker pinion shim and I am on my way to checkin it all over again:LOL: !!!THnx for the new pics and diagrams,its clear now.:o

Well....I have come to the realization that reading the mitre marks on the gears are a little more complex than I first imagined,I want to apologize for not getting 5 dollars worth of marking compound and posting these less than stellar mitre pics.:o
I am off to get the pinion shims and some of the correct gear marking compound.I will wash it all down with brake clean and use the marking compound to get some readable markings,so that no one has to get thicker glasses :LOL:

Here we go...I see why the marking compound is recomended.:rolleyes:
I still think you are right on on what needs to be done,Denny.I just wanted to use the correct compound so that it was at least easy to read my pics,as your pay on this job is not the best:LOL:

The backlash is at .008 the ring has .010 and the directions say do not vary from the stamped ring .010 more than .004 and it also mentions not run this too tightly. A larger lash than the stamped .010 is always desirable opposed to smaller reading,this is what the directions say .

The pattern is almost identical to the chart that came with the gears now:3dSMILE: But I still will go off of your final say Denny...

Shawn....leave it there....I noticed "coast" side pattern on the last pic. You have good patterns for doing this and not knowing how hard or soft your material is, I'd leave it. If backlash specs are correct, you won't have noise and you won't chew up these gears where they are now.

:CRY: Well murphy struck ,...the new pinion bearing and the old are 15 thousandths different:LOL: Soo back to pressing /shimming/and marking compound:LOL: I got it down now ,its just a matter of doing it now!!

Know what?????.....if I ever find that Murphy guy, we're gonna have some fun. He's bit me in the rear quarters more than I care to mention.

Well I used the image of the metal murphy to run the other murphy off and this is what I have now.......I think it may need a few thousandths more on the pinion shim,the back lash is .014 now.The added pinion shim should also close the lash up a little more.?:confused:

It was at .029 thick,its now at .035 thick{the current pics},I just moved it to .037 and have some new pics....it still looks like it could stand .003 more...
I will post the new pics at .037 here in a sec.The backlash is at .013 now.

I know my arm and hand hurt from manually pressing the bearing on and off:LOL: 1 more time is no big deal now:CRY:

.037 pinion shim thickness and .014 on lash....I think I have a combo of .041 or .042 I can try on the pinion.Which will give me the .004 to .005 that I need to make some more yellow marks..:LOL: :CRY: :confused: as I shim more under the pinion the backlash seems to get smaller...When I had the correct pinion shim with the old bearing everything was right on ,hopefully it will do the same again.

1..more....I tried the best I could on these pics ,but the weather is over cast and the shadows are falling all over the place ,but I think they are readable.The backlash is at .011 now:3dSMILE:
I got carried away with the compound this time too ,which makes the bottom of the proof marks seem a little less than they are.

.011 on the backlash ,I need to do the final crush sleeve ,clean the bearings and case again,lightly oil and re-assemble,I think that may be it ?:)
20-25 inch pounds rotational resistance on pinion only
gear mitre ,good:)
lightly oil bearings
55-60 ft lbs on bearing caps on carrier
grease all seals
install spider gears
install axels
replace cover!!!!

Update....all buttoned back up and looking good,thnx to all your patient help Denny!!:D
