Hi Jack, I'm running no transmission cooler as per PRC radiator manufacturers recommendation. My trans cooling will be an external aluminum finned cooler and another external cooler which is temp sensitive using an electric fan when the temp gets too high. I previously used this same set up on a 4 wheel drive vehicle with a BBC which ran the hot sand dunes all day long without ever overheating or destroying my tranny. Maybe I was lucky?
I'm going without a radiator tranny cooler for my 30 roadster attempting to keep the BBC roller as cool as possible in the tight confined motor compartment also using an electric fan & shroud, cut out side vents on my hood side panels, and a custom made flow through set up under my radiator. As with any advice it is open to interpretation and one can use it or ignor it. :)

I have a 400 turbo trans, with an external cooler only, not running it
thru the radiator. Running a big aluminum fan capable of 10,000 rpm,
would think this along with an electric fan, would surely cool this bad
boy down under all circumstances. I have a tilt over fiberglass front
end on this car with a 9'' cowl hood. I've heard you guys mention a
shroud around the radiator, regardless of what i run. What makes the
shroud any better? rd

the shroud controls the air that the fan is sucking through the rad.

Yep, the shroud forces the fan to pull air through the radiator. Without a shroud, it can pull air in from the sides, top and bottom. That air provides no cooling.

THANKS FOR ALL OF THE GOOD ADVICE AND INFO.rd

Also run a washer with a hole, NO THERMOSTAT. This allows for a more even cooling and can never go bad.
-
Dadnova, how big of a hole would you suggest in the washer?

Check out the fan from a late model lincoln mark series. Best kept hotrod secret. These things are extreme cfm. I found one in the bone yard for 15.00 bucks with shroud and use it on the 440. They are two speed and can be used pull or push.
