Thread: need help w/rear id and brake

i have this (photos below)rear on a 1936 chevy sdn. i could not find any id on the case. i did find numbers on the gear case 3789812 B14 64. the rear measures from backing to backing plate at 54 inches. for the brakes i think the backing plates are for 11 inch drum brakes. in what year did they use 11 inch brake drums

Looks like a '55-64 chev rear axle, probably in the early years of that range if it doesn't show evidence of the spring brackets being added later. The big P on the carrier, along with the part number you gave indicates it's positraction (assuming the original or equal replacement parts are in there).

If my (failing and unreliable) memory serves me correctly, the big brakes were on that vintage (55-64) Olds and Pontiacs. Think the chebbies just had 10 or 10 1/2" brakes??? Are the shoes 2 1/2" or 3" wide???? Anybody else remember for sure???

Pretty sure it's a late 50's corvette rear. I have the same in my T.
