I am considering installing a Must II IFS in my current project(48 GMC Trk).
The last time I used this front suspension I used a T-Bird power R&P. The Chevy ps pump put out too much pressure & it was very tritchy at 70 mph. I was afraid if I had to swerve to miss something on the road I would lose control.
I see Heidts has a valve to reduce pressure going to the r&p. Have any of you had experience w/this valve or have another method to improve the driveability ?
I used the mustang P-R&P on my 38 with the GM pump and never had a problem.
The pressure valve is fine and probably worth considering, but my guess is that you had a caster setting that was incorrect or the toe was out under operating conditions. Either will give you 'twitch'
There are several companies selling the pressure valves like the one from Heidt's. I don't have one on my car, but have many friends that have used them with much satisfaction. Never had a problem with my car being twitchy at 60 + mph, but steering is very quick at very slow speeds.:eek: You get used to it, but could be a problem for someone unfamiliar with it. I would recommend getting the pressure valve if you have concerns.
I put the valve in mine, still plenty easy to steer at low speed, and much more stable and susceptible to twitchy on the highway. IMO well worth the money....
That's for the replies. I'll try to find a valve that screws into the pump first. If not made, I'll use Heidts external valve.
Well I called Borgeson's & they do not have such a valve. They sell spring shims....I have heard they do not work(?):confused: . I'll keep searching.
I see this issue come up every once in a while and I wonder why you wouldn't use the MII pump and make brackets to adapt it to the motor you're using.
My last engine swap was a 302 Ford into a 83 Mitsubishi truck. I mounted the Mitsubishi pump on the 302 and it worked like it was supposed to.
My friend down the street used a ford pump on a modified chevy SB bracket, worked great. My 38 Silverstreak has a 75 Nova front sub-frame clip so no problem.
Thats a great idea to use a Ford ps pump. That was in the back of my mind, but the thought got lost in a efford to find a way to reduce the chevy pump pressure. I might be forced to go that route but prefer to try the Chevy pump first. (I have a new GM pump & Allen Grove brks)
Dave...what valve did you use & how much camber are you running?
I read an article in some mag many years ago (maybe Street Rodder???) on this problem. Their solution, as I remember, was to weaken the spring in the pump by cutting out a coil or two. I did this and it worked for me. Running it still on a 36 Plymouth with small block Mopar, GM pump and Mustang II power rack.

works great and cheap Iput one in my 50 f1 mustang II about $17.00 too. they have some new parts and a variety of washer to change the output. I believe I went from about 1100 psi to about 750 and works great. ED ke6bnl Borgy oneQuote:

Don - Here is a nut shell version. "For a chevy pump designed for a power Saginaw ball & nut steering box". "Note where the pressure line comes out of body - a nut is there- and behind it is a spring-loaded bypass or pressure regulator valve. Cut a coil off the spring to get a better match between the Chevy pump and the Ford rack". The rest of the article just covers the potential problems with adaptive plumbing between the Chevy pump and Ford rack. I had no problem having a new line made. It just takes money! I have used this set up for quite a few years now and it solved my "twitchy Steering". There are helpful photos with the article.
