Sorry for cluttering up CHR with this, but I hope someone here can point my in the right direction. My son has a '90 Cavalier w/a 134 ci 2.2, TBI, three speed auto. On acceleration from a stop, this thing bogs pretty hard. When you finally get up to operating speed, it runs good. It kinda feels like driving with a cold engine, but it happens at operating temperature. It starts and idles good, no smoke or odd noises noticed. :whacked: What is goin on here? Any ideas appreciated, Thanks.
When was the last time you serviced the fuel filter? There's probably a code to be read from the controller.
Is there a way to check the codes without a scanner? I had a dodge that would flash codes after you cycled the ignition key a number of times.

If it stumbles off idle, and stumbles when you punch it at driving speed, I would say that your fuel filter is clogged or you are missing the TBI equivalent of an accelerator pump shot. I dont know what the equivalent is or if TBI even has something to perform that function...but that's what it sounds like. :confused:
Have you checked the plugs to see if they look okay?
Are we diag-no(guessing)sing without pulling codes? OK.
In order of highest Odds:
1. Clogged Cat Converter
2. Low fuel Delivery due to Injector, Pump or Filter
3. Improper Ignition Timing
4. Transmission not downshifting
5. Bad Computer Prom
6. TPS and/or O2 Sensor
BTW, got any pics of that New Yorker? I had a 65 about a dozen years ago that I miss. I do get to see it occasionally behind the guy's house that I sold it to (As a stripped down carcass.)
lucforce, I plan on getting the codes checked, but everything is covered in ice around here right now. I don't have many pics of the New Yorker, it's too bad about the one you had, these things are fairly uncommon and a pain in the a** to find parts for. Thanks for the guesses.
Yeah, I wouldn't mind so much that he stripped the car, but the car was in excellent shape when he got it. The interior was mint, there were literally no flaws to the interior of the car. Everything worked, and the car was dent and rust-less. I think he got the car with around 62,000 miles. Even the original paint was still in great shape-Though I never cared for the gold-bronze color.
