Will a straight six fit in a 29 Ford?
I have one that is brand new in a crate in storage and I have a 28 Ford PU that is not stock and I was currious how tough it would be to put this motor in a 28.
I am wondering if it is too long or could it be packed in there?
The motor is a small Ford six that was going in a maverick.
The maverick was wrecked in a deer collision and I have this new motor just gathering dust.
there about the same length as a SBF 302, so yes it will fit. the aftermarket is growing for them immensly too. www.classicinlines.com has lots of stuff for them, and will be releasing an aftermarket aluminum head for them, which flow way better than the log heads.
Yes i agree with matt, they are about the same, but ford made two different inlines, the one that was in my 61 fairlane was way bigger than the ones in my falcons, so if you have the smaller of the two then you should have no problems
You are still going to have to sink it into the firewall a ways.
Yup, better do some measuring, not a lot of radiator to firewall room on a 28. Lots of companies make recessed firewalls for the A bones.... Always best to measure first.....
I can't imagine this happening without a major firewall tunnel. Even the 302 in my '27 on '28 A rails needed a 4 inch tunnelled firewall, and a six sure seems a lot longer than that. As said, I would take some measurements first.

I will measure a 302 we have sitting in the shop, and my 200 block, I'll post the diffrence in length tomorrow. I do know, it can't be more than a couple inches diffrence or so. a 200-250 block has a 3.680 bore stock, if you take that in consideration, the block has 22.08" of cylinders, lengthways, so, it's likely 5" or so, longer than that ( figuring in cylinder wall thickness, ect... ). a V8 with a 4" bore, would have 16" of cylinders lengthways, so it may have 5" or so more than that ( figuring in cylinder thickness, ect... ), but also, this is a bare block I'm talking about, I know that a SBF waterpump sticks out a bit because of the way it attaches to the block, the small 6 water pump is much shorter, the impeller actully sits inside the block right in front of the #1 cyl.
the 6cyl in a '61 Fairlaine would be in the same class as the 223 I6, never offered in a Falcon Chassie, in fact, it probably wouldn't fit. The basic Falcon chassie was used from 1960-1980 where it was last used ( tho had many changes ) in the 1980 Ford Granada.
Matt, no matter what you put in an A, other then the 4 popper it came with, it will need firewall work and it will be tight....Quote:

So, put in a 6 and have everything crowded, limit the resale to people who like underpowered cars or use a V-8, installs easier and goes faster, open your resale market to probably about 10 times as many people..... I guess it wouldn't take me long to decide.....

I have no intention of selling the truck so resale is a moot point.
I actually plan on using it to haul a bale or two of hay or horse tack etc around my place.
It will likely never see a public road.
I just want to build a neat old truck to light duty haul stuff around my little ranch.
The truck was pulled out of the woods and cost zero so any amount of resale would be substantial.

Didn't we have this very discussion on here a couple of months ago? I remember the same question, and the same outcome..........he was going to use it to drive around the horse farm. If I remember correctly, he was hell bent on using it, regardless of what we suggested.
I still think you will be sharing a lot of leg room with that long 6, though.

not all 200's are underpowered, yes Ford lied when they gave them a 120 HP @ 4k rating, they barly breathe at 4k because of the crappy flowing log head and won't rev past 4k stock, they actully dyno around 80 RWHP. anyway, 150 HP is not uncommon, can be easially obtained with some port work done to the head, and 9:1 or higher comp, with good quench and squish values figured in. 250-300 is easy to obtain with a turbo, and 500 HP is in the picture also, using the new aluminum cyl head and turbo, on a 250 I6 which has a longer stroke only, same 3.680 bore, HP with that combo on a 200 would be around 450 HP, this is assuming the engines are buit for power and not torque.Quote:
