    Tig Welding Question

Ok I would like to know from you Tig pro's.When tigging I quite often get a little bit of porosity somewhere during the weld.I clean as much as possible and wire brush.I was wondering if porosity happens from to much argon pressure or is strictly cleanliness.Thanks.

Earlier this week, when I was researching the Tig I ultimately bought, I was told that the gas for tigs has to be 100 % pure argon, not the 75-25 blend that we use for our mig welder. Could it be that you have inadvertently picked up a wrong fill?

    Just a thought.

    tig question

Cleanliness is very important, material and electrode. Are there any drafts near where you are welding? That can blow the argon away. Is the electrode clean? Are you sharpening it with a dedicated sanding disk or grinding wheel?

    Hope this helps

Ive never been able to find a reason you cant use mixed gas for tigging steel, and you cant use straight gas for mig, it makes no sence, anyway, i could be a number of things, bad gas flow ,to much gas flow, drafts , check your filler rods, they can get surface rust if left in a bad spot, and cause problems

It sounds to me like it is either as Don said the wrong mix or just not enough gas. The same thing happens with Mig when you are out of gas or not enough.

Thanks for the suggestions,we use strictly argon for our tig and a 25-75 for our mig.It could be the electrode as I do use a grinder to sharpen often. When it occured yesterday I thought the gas flow was to much as it seemed like it was pushing the metal out.Was better after dropping the flow but still did happen. What about to much amperage? Thanks.

Dirty steel or electrode will cause a bunch of problem, as will a draft on the welding area. I always clean the electrode with a scotch brite pad and make sure the steel is clean. I always sand the protective coating off the material too... Whatever that oily black stuff is it will sure make for lousy welding....

Could it be 100% of the exterior is clean, and the interior is still dirty?Just a thought.

I once had porisity problems after prepping the weld area with a grinding disc that had previously been used on aluminum.

yes i had it on steel i use a gas lens that may help and like said get it clean the filler rod i use 70s-2 on steel. ex tube i like ss 347 filler rod . you may be getting gas out i can weld with every thing the same filler rod heat flow and put down great welds and go out the next weld and have it happen this happen more to me on tubing if i use 347 rod it just will not happen i use argon i have not use any mix gas for tig welding.
