ok folks, a small update on the el camino, I've got everything but a carburator and a set of headers to build the motor. Since I've gotten sooo close to being ready to slider 'er in, I'm standing at the crossroads of manual vs automatic again.

My tastes have changed, I no longer want to go in a straight line as fast as I can. I want to enjoy my ride and take the girl out on sundays in the sun for a little romp in the mountains. However, being the 19 year old male that I am, everyone knows that I won't be able to resist trying to put my right foot where it belongs, through the floor :D

My question pertaining to your thoughts is: Will an m22 be beefy enough to with stand the ballpark of 450 HP (similar torque, maybe a little less) I won't be brutalizing this transmission on a daily basis, but I want it to be there if I see someone and feel the need to blow his/her doors off :LOL: The reason that I am at a crossroads is that I have an automatic now, but I need to buy a good 3000 stall torque converter and a full manual valvebody. Those two right there will be about 1000 bucks for what I want. I can darn near get the standard in there, with a good clutch for that amount. What do you guys think? I know this is about the 3rd time i've made a post pertaining to this topic and its probably a bit redundant, but I am about ready to do it and I want to make sure that I've covered all my bases before I jump off to one side or the other.

I've always been a manual trans guy, I'd go with the Muncie. On street tires the truck will more then likely blow the tires off long before it tears up the trans. The old M-22's are a tough unit and came from the factory behind a lot of big torque GM engines. My vote goes with the Muncie....

I vote for the m-22, if you can get the whole set-up in the car for less than a grand,would you be a pal and get me one too? Hank

Rowing your own sure has the Kool factor, and probably good for a 19 year old, but at 62 years old, I want the auto tranny. If you ever think about getting down the 1/4, noone can row 4 as fast as a good auto with shift kit can get er done.

3 on the tree ,manual steering and manual brakes ,I fear there is not gunna be much coffe drinking on the way to work in my future:LOL: Stick shift is fun ,the auto is more driver friendly. El camino ,your age and where you live ,stick shift all the way!!!

Go for the Muncie M22, they are a bullet proof gearbox. So you should have plenty of fun shifting the gears whenever you feel like it.

AN M-22 can take about anything you can throw at it. that would be my choice if i had to choose.

m-22 for sure! I had a 4 speed in my ride [at 19] took it out,sold it.
& went through 3 autos. The next x it goes Im goin back to a stick [Im 42]
The sticks are way more fun & thats why we drive 'em.
