On a 9" rear, is there an easy way to tell if it is a 28 or 31 spline? Are the axle flanges different? My rear doesn't have a tag on it.

A method to identify 28 spline axle shafts can be by looking at the center brake hub area, a rectangular slot in the center will indicate 28 spline axles.The 31 spline axle shafts will have a different appearance, with one small center chamfer and two outer holes in the center hub, however,28 spline shafts can also appear like this to, so it does not always indicate 31 spline shafts (see photo below). Early axle shafts of the 28 spline variety cannot be shortened, due to either a reduced diameter between spline end and bearing end (early Mustangs,Fairlanes, Falcons etc.), or because of a tapered shaft which doesn't allow for re-splining (early full size).It appears starting around 1967 the 28 spline shafts became more solid and the shaft diameter increased along the entire length, so shortening is possible and they can be be resplined to their original 28 count.Most 31 spline shafts can be shortened and resplined with no problems.

My brother in law(BIL) is a GM engineer - works on the Astro mini vans. Back in 96 we bought a Plymouth Voyager with the 'new' double sliding doors. My BIL said, and i quote "GM won't EVER to that, it is structurally unsound and not safe."....Uhhh, what was it GM had out in 98??????? A double sliding door mini van!

Hmm... so Ford changed its basic design the 1st time after 21 years to the ohv, and hasn't since, and Chevy looks at it like: IF IT AIN'T BROKE WHY FIX IT??
Hmmm...Ford DID change...i guess you can't get away from fixin your chevy long enough to have noticed...Back in 91 Ford introduced their 'modular V8' - it can be had with DOHC. Oh, I'm sorry, your a Chevy guy...that is Double OverHead Cam (the cam is now 4 cams, and be abover the valves in teh head - i can draw ya pitchers if ya need em). And Chevy does keep redesigning the top end of their 1955 engine (vortec?).
What was it i read in come Car n Drvier/Automobie/Motor Tredy...GM has NO OHC engines?? Quad 4 is out o production. Hmmm...
Japanese are ALL OHC, and taking over the market left right and sideways, and GM does what? Puts a HONDA engine in their new SATURN sports model (RedLine)

There are only a couple of cheeses that are compatible with Fords. American and Parmezian, I think.

Youse got a lesabre? I thought you had all old cars, as in Ts and 32s and such. The lesabre is nice in teh winter - heat, windows, and such. almost as good as indoor plumbing! Glad to see you patronize the dealer - besides warranty, they do serve a purpose and most of them are honest.
i like my 93 taurus tons better that the wife's 98 sable - even though it has more toys and is 'supposed' to be more advanced or what have you. I still liked my 63 galaxie the best, but teh taurus comes in a close second.
back in HS a friend has a 74 lesabre and a 79 convertible. both nice, but the 70 was a rag top...i am partial to full size cars, and the older i get teh less, i hate to say this outloud, i need speed. Oh man, i'll burn in car hell for that, huh?:LOL:
