'36 PU rear suspension Q:

So my younger brother has aquired a 36 chevy pu and I am gonna source the rear suspension for him. This is my own will, cause when I hear the plans he has I cringe. I am thinking Triangulated 4-link and how much of this can be aquired from stock gm's or templates for cutting my own? hiem or stock? are some Q I have. It is gonna be a 57 chevy rear axle and the frame is gonna be cut short in the back for the already shortened bed. Its strictly street no race and will have a small chevy mill. Nuthin outrageous just a mini cabbed chaneled PU. Looked at some of the members pics but really didnt see any good fanny shots.:LOL: Am curious as too the DIY guys setups.

MY 37 Dodge PU is on hold until I can get some other cars done, but the rear end is in. I took an easier way out and used the stock (rebuilt) leaf springs and a 68-76 Nova rear end (these cars used leaf springs) and it was just about a bolt in for my truck. As I recall it was a couple inches narrower than the 55-57 rears.

If you've measured the width (with the tires and wheels your going to use) and the 57 is the right width, you might consider using a 68-? Chevelle rear end, as if memory serves correctly, it it is the same width as the 57 unints. It also has the lugs on the top for the upper control arms.

If you need something narrower than the chevelle unit, I think the 78-up Monte Carlo units (also coil springs) are the same width as the Nova, but you'll need to check.

Parallels are to long, the frame wil be shortened. and those would put the axle center way too forward.

Come on I know someone on here at least has some helpful hints, book ideas, or links. :)

I have a '78 Monte Carlo frame, suspension and such sitting out in my yard. I had planned to use the 4-link complete under my '54 Chevy pickup, but its really just an inch or two narrow for the '54, which probably makes it just right for the '36.

I'm now looking for something a little wider, like maybe a Chevelle from '73 or '74. If you want to see what the Monte Carlo suspension looks like check my web site. There are a number of pictures.

Thanks so much guys I am going to be putting a four link together end of the month. But not for the 36, he decided on traversed spring set real high in the rails to get it low and eliminate more rear rail length. So i'll put that together for em, then it's on to my first 4-link build. Just got ta do it!
