ballast resist location, type etc depends on teh car maker..Chrysler's are famous for the white ceramic ballast resistar on teh firewall..goes bad so often that EVERYONE with a Chrysler car carries a spare in the glovebox. Used on points and elec ignition cars up to fuel injection took over at least.
have seen something similar on other cars too. Most have it built into ...the wirng? ign switch? Have heard of a few GM's going bad, never heard of a prob with a Ford one.
Whne you are carnking hte car (key in CRANK position) the coil gets full battery voltage (resistor is BYPASSED). when you put the key in RUN the coil juice is routed throuh the resistor to the coil gets less voltage, lasts longer.
When teh ballast resistor goes bad, the car won't start (at least on Chryslers) - no spark
