Chassis paint question...

I am about to order a kit car and do not see the sense in powdercoating, as I will have to weld a couple things in place. My concern is the bare chassis sitting in the garage until its ready to paint.

I have thought of a light coat of machine oil or something, but that would probably just cause problems down the road when its time to paint. I have also thought about shooting a light coat of primer on it and just sanding it off in areas to be welded, but not sure if this would be a good idea or not.

Any thoughts, ideas, or opinions?

I think I'd go with the primer, easy to sand then touch up areas you have to weld on. As you said, anything else creates a hassle when it's time to paint.

A lot of your paint stores will sell a product called "Prep and Prime" or something of that nature. What it does is prepare the metal for primer, but at the same time it primes the metal so that it will not rust. It also cleans the metal and will get rid of light rust. I think last i looked it was about 18 dollars a gallon but it makes the metal ready to paint and you can leave it sitting for a long time without having to worry about rust. You can also weld on this.

Thanks for the replies. I will research the prep stuff, and if no luck, I will use the primer method. Even with a spray can of primer, I guess it would come off easily with solvent, and would still help protect the bare metal until its ready for the spray gun.

I use WD-40, it washes off easy & won't promote rust. When you get done welding just wash it down with rubbing alcohol, and prime it- good for go.
