filler neck relocation

Okay, here's my problem. On my 65' C-10 Fleetside, I relocated my fuel tank to under the bed behind the rear axle to get the tank out of the cab. My problem now is, I can't figure out a good place to put the filler neck so it's actually higher than the neck of the fuel tank. I tried already to put it in the center of the bed like most guys do, but the problem is that there is a sag in the fuel hose which prevents the fuel from entering the tank and causes it to over flow out the fuel inlet. Therefore, I relocated it to the fenderwell (in the bed). This location actually works, but once again the problem is clearance between the tire and hose. The truck isn't lowered yet and the tire already rubs on it. I was thinking about trying to go through the side of the bed behind the rear tire, but there is a cross brace in the way that would require some cutting and would end up being visible through the bed. Hopefully, someone on here has done this so I'm up for suggestions. I'm fairly new at restoring and modding older vehicles, but I have plenty of mechanical ability.

I'm guessing it doesn't have a vent tube? If it doesn't, I think you need one. Then you won't get that airlock. You may have to fuel it slowly, though because the weight of the fuel is what will push it past the trap. Maybe just do a test first, disconnect the fuel line at the top and see how it fills. Use a can of gas though, I don't think you want to try it at a gas station, lol.

you will not need a vent tube if the cap is vented .look at some gas caps for boats but they need a vent tube to work some guys use them they are small and look good and they are all in one cap body and hose hookup this is what i would use

How about put the filler neck where you want it, then get a piece of exhaust tubing with the correct od bent to go from the filler to the tank. The connections between the tubing and the tank, and the tubing and the filler could be made with fuel hose (I get mine at a NAPA store) with the same id as the tubing od. Put clamps on everything, run your vent tube back up to the filler and use a vented cap. Don't try to cheap out and use radiator hose for the connections instead of fuel hose, gas will eat through a radiator hose over time....

I actually went to NAPA and purchased their 1 1/2" flexible fuel hose since the rigid fuel hose they had kinked at every bend. I also went to the junk yard and yanked a filler neck off some random car just to have the flapper and fuel cap. This assembly had a vent line already attatched. The fuel tank also has two open ports that I have capped off since it's a replacement for the 77' Surburban.
I suppose that I could use one of the capped off lines with an in-line check valve for my vent other than using the one off the filler neck. I drove the truck to work yesterday to have some friends look at it for some ideas, and noticed that the rear tire is rubbing thru the fuel hose....(not good)!! Therefore, I think what I'm going to do is try to shorten the length of the filler neck assembly so it pulls the hose closer to the fender well to gain some more clearance. I'm also wondering if when I do get to lowering the truck, whether clearance will be an issue. I wouldn't think so, since it's all attatched to the frame, but I'm concerned about suspension travel. After work today, I'm going to run head first into a wall and try to figure it out.
As if this isn't enough.....the tranny started leaking ATF yesterday too!! I guess that's the fun part of fixing up older vehicles. You gotta pay to play....

I would definitely reposition the filler so that it is not in the wheel well. Even if the tire doesn't hit it, debris off the tire could quite easily punch a hole in it. JMO

And yeah, if fixing up the old stuff was easy, everybody would be doing it!!!!

Is there any way you can bring the filler up through the bed? There are plenty of places to put it right? Whatever you do, you need to do it quick cuz your sitting on a bomb with the filler routed thru the fender well. A gas fire is nothing to mess with so I can't emphasize enough, get it fixed ASAP before this turns into a tragedy. Good luck!

Well, I FINALLY got it to work... I ended up taking it straight through the bed. I cut a hole right above the tank filler neck and installed the filler cap I yanked from the junk yard. It actually looks half decent. It's not the most symetrical looking install, as far as cosmetic looks are concerned, but it's functional. I'll try to figure out how to post a picture of it on here for all to see. I'm just lucky that I plan on replacing the wood and fender wells in the bed because I now have two holes. So much for trial and error.....more error on my part. At least I didn't cut a hole in the actual fender. That would've been tragic seeing as how I would've had to tac weld a patch on it. I can't stress enough how much I appreciate all of you're replies on this subject. I'm sure I'll be asking plenty more crazy questions through-out my project......but for now..thanks so much!!!
