rear end rebuild help

I purchased a rebuild kit from summit, and the spider gears as well...... Purchased the ring and pinion gear from jegs most of it is Richmond. Here what I have done so far we swapped out the old gear for a new one, had the bearings pressed off and replaced. Pressed on a new bearing to the pinion, and installed new races......... Found that the spider gear were shot......

Everything lined up proper wear pattern was good. Shimmed up nicely...... When we installed the pinion gear is when we ran into problems. Had everything in position put on the seal, crush sleeve, yoke and washed and new nut. Turned a couple threads........ this is the problem either my gun is not strong enough to push the yoke back in and crush the sleeve or something is binding. Not sure, can't get the yoke to move in........... Any one have any suggestions its possible my ir impact gun is week and I only have a 12 gallon compressor..... My snap on gun is way stronger and can get a 33 gallon craftsman on loan.......... My question to all of you would be am I suppose to crush the sh*t out of it or am I missing something? Any help would be appreciated

p.s. Its a 1988 formula with TBI 5.0, 700r4 trans and 10 bolt 2.73 rear

Its been a while but I don't think an impact will make the inital crush. I think I used a 3/4" drive socket and a breaker bar WITH a length of pipe to start it. Once it has started to collaps you wont need the pipe. keep an eye on it as if you go to far you have to start over. Hope this helps

You will not cruch the sleve with a impact as cffisher said, There is a option to the cruch sleve and it's a cruched sleve elimnator. It has a spacer and shims to set the preload and this setup is better for highperfomance apps

where can on get extra crush sleeves or these spacers

and If I use a fish scale how do i know what reading will be equivalent to 25 inch / lbs?????????

I always used the old one, I would get the pre-load on the bearing that I wanted , ping the pinion nut so it can't back off and go racing. I have add a shim to the crush sleeve if I thought I need it. it take about 400 lb. to collapse the sleeve. you need a torque multiplier to do it with, but I haven't seen one sense I left the GM dealer 30 yrs ago. 25 in./lbs. is not much drag.

You will need a in/lb torque wench to set the preload. Give this place a call Randys ther site has tons of info and if you call they are very helpfull. I did my first R&P change 6months ago got my parts through them and most of the tech help to.

You're going to need a big pipe wrench to hold the u-joint flange,and a socket and breaker bar to turn the nut to start the crush, once all pay is out,use an inch pound torque wrench to measure pre-load, try to get around 10 inch-lbs of drag. hank

First you should have installed the pinion and got the proper crush on it before anything else was installed,you can't measure the proper preload if your trying to turn the ring gear, the seal should not be installed untill you set the preload, then remove the yoke,install the seal and reinstall the yoke using locktight on the nut. They also make an E Z crush sleeve that you can do with your impact,
sometimes those are a little hard to find but check with your local auto parts store
