Fuel pump mounting...

Well my dad has an '87 Suburban. 350ci with Throtle Body Injection. Thing is we have replaced the fuel pump like 3 times since we have owned it. Normally I don't see fuel pumps going out every year or 2....
Anyways the fuel pump is located on the top of his gas tank, which is obviously one pain in the butt to get to. Drop the gigantic tank that beast has replace the pump, then remount the tank... makes for an exciting day.
Anyways I was wondering if it's possible to mount the pump in a different location, for easier acess of course. If we attached a fuel line from the tank about 2-3feet down to where the fuel pump would be, then more line to the throtle body injectors. Would the pump still work properly? And it would be best to mount it somewhere on the body of the vehicle correct?

The lazy mans way. Once I cut a piece of the trunk floor sheet metal making an inspection plate at the top of the tank. Replace the pump and then make a cover larger than the piece you cut out, seal it and screw it in place. Then if it goes out again just pull up your carpet and pop of the cover.
If yours can be done that away, you have to look at it to be sure, i can't picture the tank location. is there sheet metal directly above the tank?

Yes Weylin, you can. I mount them to the inside of the frame rail.
Are you sure that it isn't an in tank pump?

Really not trying to be rude, but if he has replaced it three times, I would hope he was sure what type of pump it was. :lol: Although the pump on my 98' Tahoe is internal.


As he said though, yes you can mount it elsewhere, many people do it.

Fuel injection runs at a lot higher pressure than a carb engine. Make sure the pump you put on is the correct pressure......

That should be a in tank pump.
TBI fuel pressure is about 14 psi.

Actually that was my dads second plan if it wasnt good to mount it halfway. He doesn't really want to cut into the floor haha but ya you could do that one my dads we have looked.
Well we will just stick with mounting it on the frame rail.
