in my auto shop class, were learning about gaskets and seals, my teacher pulls the HB out of a 4.3 Vortech cutaway demo motor, and shows us the groove on the shaft that goes into the motor, explaning that the seal did that, he wanted us to think about/ find out how to fix it, so how would that get fixed? Is it get a thicker seal to fill the groove?

Thinwall sleeve pressed onto the hub then a new seal on the timing chain cover.

You can buy a kit that fixes this at most part stores,
It has a thin stainless steel sleeve that covers the machined surface of the HB, and you can use a standard seal.

reminds me of a rear end problem. there was a kit that included a slightly offset bearing or seal that would ride on a new, undisturbed area.
another way we do at work is to build up the scored area with weld and lathe smooth. Then lathe polish.

On the motors with no HB bolt (after you heat it in hot water he! he!) when you drive it on, don't drive it up all the way. **)
uhmm, won't that throw the pulleys out of align?
dunno about serpentine belt, but might be a little hard on v-belts

no, you're only talking just a little, 1/32" or so. most v belts dont run 100 % no way. i've have had to do that to line the belts up before. :eek: **)

not enough to hurt nothing on a daily driver. i did this a few times 40 yrs. ago before thay started to make the repair kit, i didn't have a good HB, so it was the only way to get the man going and far as i know it worked out fine. that kit haven't been around for ever. i'm only talking a few hundred thousand. something i did when i had no other choice. dont drive the seal in all the way will work in a pinch also or knock it pass the old place. the first shops i worked in we were 30 miles from a parts store, so we had to make do with what we had. :HMMM: :cool:
If the groove is nice and smooth a new seal will seal just fine on a daily driver.At least it has for me.
if its got a grove deep and wide enough to hange my finger nail in it i try to do something with it. im sure i have put them back at the same place and got by with it. i've seen some mighty deep though. **) :cool:

Be sure to lightly file the groove before putting the sleeve on. Any small ridge will wreck the sleeve as it's pushed on.
