I've run into the the same thig I think your talking about a few times primarly on the 57-62 MOPARS, the steering is so assisted that their is no road feel.

The last one of these cars that I built for myself was a 57 Dodge that I was running a latter modle Saginaw pump on. The pump was rated at about 15 more PSI than the original Chrysler pump had. After I had it together I had the opportunity to do some comparisons with the 3 cars with the original Chrysler pumps on them. As far as I could tell there was no disernable difference in the feel.

I'd be really interested to know how far you have to lower the pressure to actually make a difference.
