Exhaust cross-over question

I am wondering what everyone's opinion is on a cross-over pipe on the exhaust. I got into a lengthy discussion with a vendor on whether the cross-over pipe was necessary or not. I have built many cars and have different feelings about the necessity of the cross-over, or X pipe.
I can see it equalizing the exhaust pressure and would agree with that. However, it minimalizes the sound of the exhaust, or should I say the sound of the cam. The way I see it, the cross-over pipe would make the exhaust sound more even and possibly more mellow (for a lack of a better term).
It seems that it kind of defeats the purpose of "Dual exhaust". I have never dyno'd one to see if it makes a difference on power or not. I want to hear about what some of the Guru,s think.

I don't like loud exhaust by any means, but I do like to hear a lttle of the cam. It seems to me that the "H" pipe would even out the exhaust, but also mellow out the effects of the cam as far as sound.
I am having a difficult time finding a good place to place an "H" pipe in this system because of the routing.

You can attenuate the low frequency sounds from an exhaust system by installing an H-Pipe.

The noise level remains about the same, but you won't set off as many car alarms as you used to.

If you're after attenuation only, you can install the H-Pipe anywhere you want as long as it's in front of the mufflers.

Using the next size down exhaust tubing - IE: 2 1/4" H-Pipe to a 2 1/2" system - makes for an easier install than using the same size tubing.

I have an H-pipe system on my Van. I love it. The sound from the pipes became more mellow, and distinct. I noticed a slightly better toque response, and a better idle.
I put my crossover directly under and just ahead of my universal on the transmission. I also put my mufflers and cats directly below the manifold outlet, and ran the pipes back from there. I was able to use a smaller body muffler, with larger inlet and outlets.
It is a simple set up and I like the results I got.

My '73 Z-28 had an H exhaust from the factory even. Replacing any factory pipes over time I've kept it the same and never felt wanting for a different exhaust sound, but that's just me.

i have a x cross in my gto it is a 4 inch exhaust and sounds geat all lot of people think its sounds very different .i have had the H cross but the X pipe is the way to go:whacked:
