Thread: 1 wire to 3 wire Alt

I just ordered a 140 amp chrome alternator for my Plymouth. I am told its nice. Anyway, my question is, this is a one wire alternator. The one on the car now is a 50 amp 3 wire. Can I convert the one wire to a three? Or do you think I should adjust the wiring on the car to a one wire? I have never had a 1 one.

Just hook the hot wire to the post on the alternator and it'll work fine.

its not gonna be but one post on the new alt. and that will be hot off the bat all the time. thats one of the good things about a one wire alt. is being able to clean up some old wires under the hood. if you wanted the 3 wires why not buy a stock alt.?

Well.I did not think about it at the time of purchase. ANd this was a 140 amp and I am having problems with my 50 amp. cutting the mustard when my electric and lights are on. Not to mention when I put heat air in the car.

you might like the one wire, looks good, easy to hook up and lets you get rid of a lot of old wires.

So what do I do with the other two wires?

One's hot all the time, the other is switched, so tape 'em up good and leave them if you have a full wiring harness. You can trace them back to a junction block and remove them, too, but I'd leave them there in case your alt. fries in Nowhere, Colorado and you can't find another 1 wire.
