I went and looked at all of the post about Wyotech and was suprised how many people thought it was a waste of money and not very help full. I live about 60 miles from the one located in Wyoming and was considering going there. I was a carpet installer and got hurt in a car accident 2 yrs ago and havent been able to work since then. I will be having surgery soon to fix the problem, and the insurance company is willing to pay for me to learn a new trade since my injurys prevent me going back to carpet. I was really considering going there, I wanted to get into custom paint jobs and body work. I already know a little I have done small repairs to my own cars and have friends that restore cars that have a shop near by and I go and watch and ask many many questions lol. Mabe I will check my local Community College and see what they offer. It would also be a very long drive and would be away from the family. I have a wife and 4 little ones decisions decisions lol
hey,
I am a current student here at wyotech. I can guarentee that about 80% of the people that go there will say it might not be worth money. This is what I have to say, about 80% of the students don't pay attention in class, screw around, don't try hard in the shop, and dont answer questions. So, if you ask one of those kids if they learned a lot, of course they are going to say no, because they were never paying attention! I am working my ass off in class and in the shop, and I am learning more than I ever thought I would, and I've only been here for 4 weeks. So if you work hard and put a lot of effort into the school, it WILL be the best choice you've ever made. Another part of putting a lot of work into YOUR schooling is studing. On average I study at least an hour a day, and my grade reflects it. So if you want to get a lot out of Wyotech, you have to put a lot into it.
hey what is the tuition at wyotech???
it just depends how long you are there. I am taking collision/refinishing, street rod and chassis fab....i think it was somewhere around $27,000, plus the housing. If you ask me, it's worth every penny of it. Let me know if you have any other questions!
well hell yes.. finally another person that agrees with me... both me and my friend are gonna be goin out there in september and startin in october... maybe well see ya there sumtime ranger... im goin for the full year and so is my friend.. that tuition was right at 38 grand... and so far yes.. i have had my doubts... but so far from what ive seen of the school its also worth every penny... and the kids that dont say it is.. just dont have a passion for it...
I agree with tim, and ranger. Its up to you to learn the trade and get your money's worth. Thier job is to make it ava, not hold your hand and make you study. No collage will do that. You left mommie at home. Lots of folks going to all types of collages, for a lot more money, and not getting a thing out of it. Work hard, pay att, study, you will get a excellent start with a strong base, screw off and you can flip burgers with the rest.
Well said young man, I applaud you :)Quote:

You don't even wanna hear my story about Wyotech.... All I can say is that the recruiters are liars and bulls****** to a bunch of students at our school and that's not even everything that happened. Should have heard what out auto tech teacher and 2 collision teachers had to say about the place.
If you look into Wyotech and don't like it then don't overlook Community College. It's much cheaper and same thing... you get out of it what you put in. Wyotech tried to tell me their school is cheaper. I told them I am paying 5000 for EVERYTHING for an Associates Degree in Auto Tech OR Diploma in Collision which is a bit cheaper like 4800. Guy at Wyotech told us that we are lying and you are still paying more at a local CC even if we DO stay home and live with our parents, etc....
Well someone needs to do math because I don't see that equation working out with me.
all i can say is that recruiters are recruiters. These guys dont teach, so to have an opinion just based on a recruter for a school you've never been to is pretty sad. Does your community college have a street rod program, or do they even teach you to tig weld? Wyotech also carries a very good name in the field, at least better than a community college. Just my 2 cents, nothing against anyone.
Also, very well said Ranger, but the same can be sad for any school or any undertaking you pursue. Keep the positive and upbeat attitude, it will take you far !!!!!
To those of you attending in the fall, here's some advise...Pack really warm clothes!!Winter in wyoming is awful and lasts forever, hell they got snow on like june 15th or something this year and has snowed on july 4th before.I recently moved to michigan (which is known for bad winters) from wyoming and they have no idea what winter really is here.
P.S. I hope you like wind, because it blows about 15-25 mph EVERYDAY!
If any of you students are looking for a job after you graduate, you might want to contact the guys at Rust to Rods.

thanks tofer.. do you work there now?
yeahh tofer.. from the quick view of ur site.. it looks quite impressive... im liking alot
yes he does occasionally. he has a couple jobs.
also thanks for the compliments guys.
To answer your question NO our school doesn't teach you street rods. No need for them to try and sweet talk us into anything. Oh and YES we TIG weld as well. TIG, MIG, ARC (cutting, etc). The CPCC school here (community College) is supposedly the 5 best community college in the nation or US or whatever one they told me. This year or last year I think it moved up to 4th or so.
Sorry I can't afford 30 grand for one year. But then again I don't count on school to get me a job and teach me what I need to know with HAND'S ON. I plan to do my school, do well in it, come out and work for myself sometime after.
about the sweett talking.. thats bullsh!t... my recruter didnt do that at all.. he just let us watch a video and asked us what we thought. he didnt say wyotech what NUMBER ONE or anything.. it was all our choice. so still.. the school is what you make of it.. so quit ur complainin when ur in debt when were makin mula.. ur loss our gain
FMX, have you attended school at wyotech ever? no? then how can you talk so much shit about the school. Ok, maybe some recruiters exagerate some to try to get more kids going here. Everything my recruiter told me was 100% true. I personally think that the school is awesome, but I also work my ass off to make it awesome. If I was like 90% of the kids that go here and dont try, yes the school would suck. Again, the school is what you make it!! I don't expect anyone to hold my hand through school, if that's what you're looking for, maybe Wyotech isn't for you then.
Well I havent went or been to Wyo-Tech , been in the business to long and dont need the basic schooling , BUT I hired a Wyo Tech kid , and he had the skills , so I didnt need to babysit him , as I could show him how to do it my way , because his prep work refelected on me not him , as My name went on the job not his :)
I had him for almost 3 years till I told him I thought he was effecient enough to go out on his own and make good money .
Well he is now head painter at a fine shop and doing well .
I have had other helpers from other schools that were good too , like they say its what you make of the school your at .
I am not Dissin' you FMX as Everyone has their oppinion , thats fine .
Your SKILLS will be the final exam when your out of school !
I also was approached 3 years ago to teach at Wyo-Tech , but if it was anywhere then Laramey I would of taken the job. :)
For a little insight , most all of you will never make more then 25K for the first few years , as you will most likely be a helper first and need to develope your Skills , and know how to manage your time and speed at work , learning this will make you money .( especially if commission )
I have made 80-100K + years and have the W2's to prove it . Thats after a long time in the business and being lead painter with 4 booths, 2 cross flows and 2 heat makeup down drafts.
Usually No Shop owner will just take a kid fresh out of school and let him have at customers cars , at least not around here .
Spray
This is also true for the mechanical side. No wrench does anything on his own untill I know for a fact his head and his rear are in touch with each other. Pay att. and learn, or some old fart like me will have to fire you and I really hate doing that.
somore good info .. thanks guys.. im still looking forward to it... ive started packin and me and my buddie are movin out in about 2 weeks.. find a job .. get settled in ... then startin in oct...
i have also been told by some other people.. that it is a basic level entry school??? what the hell.. street rod.. high po engines... i dun think so.. but so far.. with me being a 18 year old now.. ive already dont 3 frame off's... my 1950 chevy pickup... a 1970 monte carlo ss, and a 1990 gmc sierra with a healty 355... all three done just by me.. in a shop 55 ft long. and 18 ft wide... a little nipco for heat... and a rig job from menards for insulation... lots of ppl say it cant be done.. but i did it.. haha... so i already have a little expirence ... hopin wyotech will take me up a step or two... i have faith... and im not gonna back down by the way.. ranger.. when do u quit ??? im also wondering about housing out there.. haha still dont have anything lined up... do you know of any cheap appts.. or condos.. ?
tim, as far as wyotech being an entry level school, i have to say yes and no. So far i am only in week 8 of collision, so i havent been through street rod yet, but I have heard a lot of good from some friends over there. The lectures we do in collision are I-car lectures. I went there with some pretty good basic experience, and i have learned a lot. There will be a lot of times where you will learn just one little thing that puts the whole puzzle together. If you want to do good, you really have to push yourself, they WILL NOT hold your hand. Honestly, there are a lot of dumb asses that go here, and they will get on your nerves sometimes. Im not sure what you mean by "when do you quit"
Im in wyotech housing, im not sure what's out there. hope this helps some
hey tim i moved to laramie august 1st and i start school in october there is alot of apartments to choose from wyotech housing is about the cheapest around besides some old trailers, ut hurry and find a job they go quick (wal-mart is always hiring) good luck
