323 Or 373
My camaro currently has 373 gears my situation is since its been nice out ive been driving the car back and forth to work. i started out with a 650 double pump then found out it was sucking vacuum through a worn out throttle shaft.then i went to a 750 vac secondary but i was getting terrible gas milage so i went to smaller jets wich caused a lean spot . this car cruises between 25 and45 miles per hour 15 miles one way and i burn about a half a tank , no lie . so i put a qjet on it gas milage did improve about an eighth a tank . the car runs alot smoother with the qjet also . my question is would 323 gears improve the milage over 373? the cars not raced and i tamed the motor down alot from were it use to be . im looking for a cruiser with good gas milage

Make that 23 views and 1 reply. Yes, you'll get better mileage with a numerically lower gear.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.

Something doesnt sound right here. an 82 camaro with a 3.73 gear and any reasonable size tire should not be turning 3200 rpm at 55mph.That sounds more like a 410 gear with a small tire . Do you have an overdrive transmission? Is your trans working properly in all gears?
Tech is right, the 323s would help, but you must have some other problems and we have yet to determine what they are. I have run 370 to 411 gears on the street for years and still got reasonable mileage for what I had. This go round I will be running 456s with a 6 speed and if my figures are correct that should work out to 342 to 1.
I would check to make sure you have 373 gears, maybe try a taller tire, but if you do have 373s, I am incline to think your problems lie elsewhere. Good Luck!

I agree, that you must have more gear than you think or some really short tires. I am running 4.88's with a 31 inch tire and turn 3000 at 55. I think I am getting better milage than you, and I have a 4500 stall and a heck of a cam in the motor.
373's should be a great gear for the street, good performance and decent milage. You just might have a tranny problem.

if its turning 3200 rpms at 55 mph its not gonna get any gas mi. either. should be around 23-2400 rpms with that gear. lets see.. 1/2 tank of gas (lets say 8 gal) in 30 miles= less than 4 miles to a gal. did i read that right?
you need to write the miles down when you feel-up a few times, so you can get a better reading on your gas miles. might not be as bad as you think.

i didnt need to hear that i have a problem else were the car has a 350 turbo in it could my speedo be off considering it had a 700r4? i run 2756015 tires and they are defintly 373 gears 41 and 11 i bought them from jegs there richmond the trans is a rebuilt from advance auto i put a shift improver kit in it seems fine irun type f trans fluid and it looks good too . im going to try again tomarrow and read the tach and speedo again ill keep you posted and thanks again for all of youre replies
Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
