The above thread should work as they are all very similar. You may try the manufacturer of the tack, sometimes they will have some quick instructions for troubleshooting available online.
i think that i get how to hook it up, but i wanted to know if i can take the wires from the stock tach and just run them to the aftermarket one? That way i wouldnt have to go and mess with all the other stuff. If any one could answer my question then I would really appreciate it.
At the risk of asking a silly question, why are you installing an aftermarket tach if you have a stock one?
it's aight man i would probably ask the same thing. my stock tach has a short in it so it doesn't work and it drains my battery and plus the aftermarket tach came free with the car so might as well hook it up right?
But yeah if any one could answer my question about the wiring i would appreciate it.
I had an 80 Z28, but it used the stock tack, but I'll see if I can help.
What brand/model is your tach? Does it have a shift light?
If I remember correctly, a tack usually has 4 wires.
ground- use "star" washer and find a good solid ground.
power- (maybe connect directly to fuse box, if not, an in-line fuse is a good idea.)
engine output- connect to Distributor if HEI (i think)
illumination- maybe connect to the parking lights in the fuse block?
It's always a good idea to use a "star" washer when connecting ground wires. Even better if you can run a wire to the frame.
This is just my recollection now, and I haven't wired a tach in a long time. I would DEFINATELY check the manufacturer's web site and see if they have a suggested schematic available. If not, call them.
old mustang owners, ford actually used the alternator output to trigger the tach on i think 68 mustang so if your fan belt was slipping you didn't get correct reading
I got instructions from the maker, but now my problem is finding the wires under the dash to hook it up. So if anyone knows the Z28 anatomy than maybe they could tell where the wires are located at and what colors to run to what. In the instructions for the tach installation it says to run the illumination wire to like the headlight switch so how would I do that? Thanks to all for the advice.
Have you tried a Camaro forum? I think the question you are asking is will the current wiring work with the new tach. If that will work you could cut and splice. Making it simpler than running the wires thru the fire wall and making connections at the light switch and fuse block. You need someone that knows the Camaro dash wiring.
That posting is more than 5 yrs old. I imagine he has either figured it out or no longer has the car.:)
