shawn, that's interesting that you would bring that up. Back in the 60's, there was a company called Turbonetics that had a product like that. They used a charge that could be replaced to spool up a compressor wheel. It was sort of like a stick of dynamite, but it burned much slower and the gases released provided the pressure to spool up the wheel. They even had a unit that bolted into the third member of the differential and drove the ring gear. You can find their ads in some of the old Hot Rod magazines.

Shawn don't you run into the problem with onagain offagain boost of mixture control ?!?!?! You'd need computer controlled fuel injection that includes anticipation. Or the engine goes psychotically lean the instant you hit the button.
Ahhh, remember Mel Gibson's ride in road warrior? The clutched blower? Musta had a fuel injection!

If you ever wondered where the "roots" blower came from, here is a little history:

You just KNOW he's gonna insist on 2 Predators
Roots-type blowers are used for gas meters also, only the process is backwards. The gas turns the rotors, which turns the gears, which turns an index or counters. I've seen a Roots meter the size of a small Buick. They can also be used as vacuum pumps. We used to say "if they'll blow, they'll suck."
