like a peice of crap, When I first drove my '51 Chevy with the stock '51 Powerglide, it had no exzaust eccept 1.5 foot coming off the manifold, it was wayyyyy to loud, car's got to have mufflers to pass inspections, ya don't need cats on cars made b4 1975 but, ya do need mufflers, not to mention, the car needs backpreassure to run correctly unless, your running at WOT all the time. The 3" pipes are too big for the small 6, you wan't 2 1/4" at most. I put 1 Thrush Glasspack muffler where the stock muffler would have been ( just behind the x member, approx drivers side front floorboard area ) it is a 31" 2" Magnum glasspack, even though it's a temporary exzaust system, it sounds awsome, at crusing speeds 45-50 MPH it almost sounds like the nice low rumble a Small block V8 makes at the same rpm, get on it and it gets better just, Idle is a little raspy along with just off idle.
thx, ive decided to leave the 235 in the belair for now. Its just a cruzin car, i dont need a drag car. Just something that i can cruz to the beach and what not. But ide like a nice exhuast! Thx for the tip, i'll check it out
The Idle still sounds nice even with the slight rasp, but it is pretty raspy at just off idle but, at about 1,500 maby ( no tach ) it starts to clean up and sound nice. You could try a set of Turbo Mufflers, Summit's got cheap 1's for 14.99, they might not be as raspy. I'm putting fenton cast iron headders on mine, with smitthys mufflers and echo can tips ( period correct parts, still produced ) it will be all 2"
The old 6's always sounded best with a Fenton header, split exhaust, and glasspacks.
I think I'm gonna get glasspacks instead of the Smitthys mufflers then, glasspacks are a little cheaper also, 17 bucks compared to 24 bucks.Quote:
