starter/alt wiring

I have an american autowire harness for my truck. There is a wire that goes from the harness to the bat stud on the starter, and a wire that goes from the bat stud on the starter to the bat stud on the alternator.
This is probably a stupid question, but it doesn't say anything about it in the directions. Do I need to take a good heavy guage wire and run it from the battery to the starter also?
Does a wire need to go from the alternator bat stud to the battery also?
Can I ground the alternator to the engine, and the engine to the frame, and also the battery to the frame?

You will need a positive battery cable (battery to starter) and a negative battery cable (battery to engine block) you should also make a 10 to 12 gauge ground wire from the block to the frame and one for the block to the body (firewall) the alternator will ground itself thru the alternator bracket....

my alternator has a stud on it that says "grd"
should I ignore it, or use it since it's there.

one last thing,
my alternator has two prongs in the middle, I guess these are for the voltage regulator, on prong has an "R" next to it and the other an "F". Apparently I'm supposed to run a wire from one prong over to the "bat" stud, and another wire goes from the harness to a prong. It said to connect this wire to the "IGN" post on the voltage regulator, however there is nothing that says ignition or anything like that.
Does anyone know what the difference between these two prongs is?
It is a Delco Remy alternator.

Right, one short piece just connects one prong right to the "batt" stud, and the other goes to a different destination.
I know which wires I need to connect to those prongs, I just don't know which to use.
The one labeled "R" is on the left when looking at the back of the alternator. The one labeled "F" is on the right.
According to the schematic you posted I should connect the one labeled "F" to the "batt" stud.

but the directions for my harness say to connect that short red one to the "bat" stud and to that center thing. There is another wire coming from the fuse box that says to connect to that thing too, it just doesn't specify which one.
most of those things in your diagram are not present, maybe the harness has something built in

that big red wire at the back of the alt should go to the bat. and that would make the little one you have in your hand hot all the time. its just there to use if you need another 12 volt wire.**)

or you could run it over to the "V" on your reg. if you need to.
