Why not do your car a favor? Drive it for a while.to let the rear end warm up ,Pull the cover plate or jerk the pumpkin. The gear lube has proberly never been changed since the car was new. Count the teeth on the ring gear, count the teeth on the pinion, Divide the pinion into the ring gear and you will know exactly what ratio you have. A LITTLE DAB WILL DO YOU! With the old lube, Take the end of one finger, dip it in the old the lube, rub your hands together and massage it in your hair,( just a little bit)It will drive your wife or girl wild....................Clean the surfaces, change the gasket, change the lube, do not overfill. But I think I know the answer to your real question without doing any of this. For what you want to accompolish the ratio is TOO HIGH!

2.14, 2.29, 2.41, 2.56, 2.73, 2.93, 3.08, 3.23 and 3.42. 3.23 was rare 3.42 < :whacked:
sounds like, just pulling the cover off and counting will be your best bet .......

ok check this out:" there's a code on the passenger side axle tube next to the center section on the front side of the tube. You will need to clean it really good to read it and it is very easy to mistake g for 6 and 1 for I or L, etc... Then you can go online to Mortec. com or just put GM axle codes in the search engine, and find the info........"
tell me if this is true. :HMMM:

I wanted to reply to thank DennyW for the neat pictures with the arrows drawn on them to show the difference between 9" and 8" Ford rears, BUT (!!!!) I can't seem to find page 2. This has also happened on my old thread "I ain't got no body" which is listed as 4 pages except I can't seem to access the later pages. Maybe there is some sort of archive disk space problem? Anyway IF we could see the page 2 of this thread I wanted to note that the 8" rear shown has a sort of "hood" over the outside of the pinion while the 9" shown does not have this obvious feature. Maybe some 9" Ford rears had this???? Anyway my rear does have that pointy hood over the top of the pinion on the outside so that is one more identifier that makes me 99.99999% sure I have an 8" Ford rear and the ratio is 3.55:1. I also wanted to ask DennyW and others how to draw the white lines on the pictures?

Richard/Tech1,
Nope, that did not seem to make any difference. However I got back the pictures on this thread by replying to page 1 and then page two showed up. Anyway, I will try replying to my own thread and see if I can recover pages 2,3 and 4. Then I will try to play around with my photo-tools. Thanks. By the way is not that hood over the pinion a giveaway I.D. for the 8" to really thrash that idea.

Just fooling around with the graphics. Here is a repeat on my rear which I originally posted to show the rear brake lines, but it also shows the little hood over the pinion which may be the characteristic of the 8" rear, but mainly I am posting it again to try to use the photo tools.

Tech1, OK I'll accept the I.D. based on the lower bolts. So far I don't see any line drawing option in my Canon software from the camera, but maybe I will learn. Anyway here is the rear with the 8" rear in question.
