Question about ASE certification?
Okay, y'all. I have to admit I am not a 'car' person. But I have a question and I could use some wise words from those who would probably know. My son is interested in attending UTI in Florida after graduating this year and I don't have a clue. I certainly want to support him in any way that I can but Florida is a long way from us. Are there other colleges like UTI? Programs? When planning for a mechanical career what do you need to suceed? He is interested in specialty mechanics such as Hot Rods. Does anyone have any advice? Have you been through college? TIA

If he can enter the "specialty" side straight away, then working on cars for a living will do him well.
Repairing normal cars every day is a drag and doesn't pay as well as it should. I work for Jaguar and only make 52K a year.
The UTI training programs are good because students are offered jobs before they graduate, and have choices for location. I think Boyd Coddington and Chip Foose hire UTI graduates straight from training...
Good luck.Ensure that the path of least resistance is not you...

Well there are a number of really good programs that are available out there . The best schools offer a degree program and feature factory training and support . I taught mechanics for 25 years after working to get journeyman level papers and then got my degree . I would suggest a bit more research by you and also include a visit to the schools you are considering . Please feel free to email me if I can be of any help at all .

This place is a little closer and apears to be a good
school.

I know Jay Leno supports it alot, sends his cars there for the kids to learn on.
I had a helper that went on his own as a painter that went to WyoTech . He liked it alot and he learned well.

For what its worth ASE doesnt impress me much myself as I am an ASE certified Auto Paint Tech of 30 years, some of the tests are way out dated and need some serious updating , they are dumbed down IMO. They act like we are dummys Like : Painter "A" says ...BLA BLA BLA , and painter "B" says ......BLA BLA BLA ...... Which painter is correct ?And you will have 4 answers that you choose from . It reminds me of grade school testing .Last edited by SprayTech; 01-15-2005 at 07:46 AM.

Once again, thank you. That is the kind of 'real' information that I am looking for. I will check back if anyone has any more info.
That is terrible, sad to hear about him.
