i think dave is right about using a gloss with a flatener in it, i think you will like the results better. my very little experience with flat black is that its always blotchy when im done, although...

how long did you leave it dry, the implement paint i used on my frame took about 3 days before i felt that is was really dry, it doesnt seem to scratch easy now.
