    where to start

im planning to build my own rat rod after dreaming my whole life.
i need some help on where to start.
i want it to be reliable enough to be driven without having to fix it every other stop and i dont want it to be expensive to build.
i want it to go fast and be able to stop haha.

my personal thought would be to buy a 28-31 frame kit with solid front axle and front discs, find a model A body of some sort (needs to be hardtop cuz of my location), caddy 500, or a big block of some sort, 9 inch and some midrange gears.

    help me please!
    what would this cost!?

I won't go into great detail here but....
First off a big block IMO is too huge for something like that. Sure a lot of people do it but for a small 30's car? Disk brakes wouldn't be needed either but are nice to have. I also do not think the so called "rat rod" guys approve of having disk brakes on their ride.
Speedway Motor's sells the whole frame kit. www.speedwaymotors.com
For the body, for a Model A it will be pretty expensive. Those are hard to find and are a lot of money. So that will be the hard thing to get unless you go with a glass body.
Maybe someone else will chime in here and help some more. Look around some more for better understanding and idea's on building a Model A. Great place for pics.... www.carnut.com
    Good luck!

Oh man, did you HAVE to post that? I didn't see but probably ONE car on there that would have been done like they did them in the 60s... oh wait they said 50s... The one I saw is the black with flames but then again it looked flat black I think so nevermind. aaron04, just ignore that site, everyone on that film are idiots and don't know what they are talking about.

The "rat rod" build on the sedan is awesome. I wouldn't call that a rr, compared to others that we have seen. That looks like a build from the 60s-70s. Clean, simple and looks good to boot. And yeah....I'll bet that coupe will blow our toupe' off if you aren't careful.

That is does, that it does, not a duece though, it has a straight A pillar, it appears to be a 30/31 A coupe. Cool car though.

No, that is a easier way to go. Cheaper of course. Something like a late 40's-50's. 51 Chevy with a chop top or such would not look too bad. Should be able to find something like this in FAIR condition from anywhere from 1800-6000.

I got a 47 Chevy Fleetline 2 door sedan sitting beside my house. Was going to street rod it, but got to many projects going. My ol' lady would love to see it go. Got $1500 bucks in her. Just want to get my money back if your interested. A good starting place for you.
