Thread: Folding jack handles for my vintage jacks

I have two vintage screw type jacks that I am looking for the handles so they can be used,I have been driving my 37 Chevy p/u for 12 years without a jack and spare so its time to change that.

You should try Ebay and or Craigslist

Probably not the heavy kind of jacks I would carry, but only my opinion.

Why not make a handle from a short piece of square bar stock that fits the recess then pinned and welded to a piece of round. You could also drill the square stock, fit the round through and bend it at an angle, and it would be more flexible. As far as folding, you can make up a hinge with some flat stock, either two pieces, one on each side or bent in a 'U' and pinned or bolted to each half. You have to leave about a 1/2+/- between each each piece so it folds flat. I have a couple of scissors jacks with folding handles and with the exception of the square stock are made like that - and are 20 plus years old.

Are those Shelley jacks? If so they were OEM in most British cars back in the 30's to 60's, I think. Some came with a three piece handle, but not folding - one piece has a rectangle end to fit the jack and the other end square shank, the end piece has the female square to mate and the other end a flat with a hole to accept the T-bar handle which is piece three. Shouldn't be too hard to fabricate one, I wouldn't think....
