I am looking for a ring and pinion gear with a 6.37 ratio for a 1939ish Ford passenger car. I'd also take a complete rearend assy for a 1942 Ford truck with a gear ratio of 6.40. Anyone know where I can get one? anyone have one for sale?

hot damn man you gotta be running one of my motors!
Why do you say that?
you are absolutely correct. The 6.40 truck gear was in trucks that were used in transportation in the mountains. I'd take a complete rearend from one of those trucks. Either that or a 6.37 gear. I am not sure what you mean by sizes. Gonna have to educate me on that one. All im telling you is what my grandfather and his friends are telling me. I'm sure THEY know what they are talking about, but its hard for me to convey it if I dont know. They are talking about original gears that would have been in a Ford/Merc from the 1939ish era or the 1940's. Does this help?
For the most part, yes. Unfortunately, it doesn't say what ratio it is. I never thought to look on ebay.
I just did that. Hopefully you are right and there are people out there who just happen to have that part. Thanks Denny!
what the heck was around back then that would twist that high????
and it hought my 5:13's werent street friendly
Scooter, the gears in my '36 were 4.41. :toocool:
If you read his other post, he is trying to find parts to restore his grandfathers '39 merc stock car racer.

Thanks, Denny. I guess casual conversation is out these days. :(Quote:

Hey guys. We're runnin a bored out original flathead from a truck. Its not one of the 60's but the bigger one. You don't actually get to turnin too many RPM's because its for short track dirt racing. The way its set up right now, we have to run in 2nd gear the whole time. The way we'd like to set it up is with a 6.37 rear end gear so we can run in 3rd gear and still be able to turn up enough RMP's to get us in the power curve while JUST coming out of the turns. Otherwise, we can't turn enough RPM's to get the power we want to run in 3rd gear. Remember...its a short track setup. So, any leads as to where I can get one? Is there anyone making repro's of the old gears?
P.S. Those higher gears usually came out of mountain TRUCKS. One guy i talked to said the 6.37 passenger car gears were made by Getz Gears. Does anyone know if they still exist?
In the old modifieds before quick change rear ends were allowed most everybody ran the short tracks in second gear. Haven't seen a set of Getz gears for many years.... Might check with Speedway Motors, old Bill Smith (owner) has more old race car stuff around then any one person should be allowed to have!!!!!!
Thanks Dave. I'll email them and find out. At least its another lead!
They have some Getz gears for sale on E Bay right now.
Yea, I saw those. They are quick change rear end gears. I'm looking for the ring and pinion gears for stock. thanks though!!!
Hey guys. Well, what has been hurting me was my lack of knowledge about gears. What I was informed was that the gear I was looking for had 37 teeth on the ring and 6 teeth on the pinion. This made it a 6.17:1 gear ratio. THAT was the ratio I was looking for. What we have in the car now was a 3.78:1 gear ratio which had 37 teeth on the ring and 9 teeth on the pinion. I found what I was looking for at speeway motors. Thanks to everyone for the help!
Denny,
Did you see the picture of the race car I have on my profile now?
Sure do. Quite a few.
^^^I love that steering wheel! :toocool: And the rest of the car... very nice!
Very nice. Looks like a great project.
God that's nice my brother would croak that's cool
