    Coil Springs for a 71 Camaro Big Block

     



    I am having the hardest time finding a pair of new coil springs for a 1971 camaro front end. The front end is now in a 1937 Cadillac LaSalle and has a 1992 Chevy 454 TBI sitting on top of it. I am trying to get the front end raised up and get the fenders off the tires. I would appreciate any help. Thanks, Jay

    reason you're having a problem is the biggest motor the camaro ever had in 71 was the 402 which uses the same springs as the 350..... so you'll either have to get 1" lift springs to compensate for the added weight or put the stiffer 350 springs on to compensate
    just because your car is faster, doesn't mean i cant outdrive you... give me a curvy mountain road and i'll beat you any day

    Springs

     



    There are several places in Phoenix that do spring work,the catalogs usually have listings in the back that will give you coil height,diameter, etc. look up your springs and go from there to find a taller one.You might be able to go thru NAPA for a better price,go to the main store at 28th Av & Thomas you'll have better luck.The other alternative is a spring rubber it looks like a big black donut they should have those too,jack the car up slip it in like the roundy-round boys do and it's done,maybe you will get off cheap and lucky too.

    Hmmmm. Got a pic from a different angle on the front suspension? Looks like the suspension is all the way up now.......??????

    The picture I sent is before the engine was installed. I have been too busy working on the car to take any more recent pictures.

    Any idea where I might find taller springs?

    Any good parts store---not the new kind that only have computers---will have a spring book. Look up the specs on your spring, then find one taller and order it. We have a NAPA store here locally that has real books instead of just the computer with the OEM spring part number. In a town the size of Pheonix, there should be a real parts store someplace!!!!

    i am eyballing your front end and see the engine is set back quite a ways ,probably about 12 inches,
    my bucket has a 500 caddy with a pont ventura front end set back about 18 inches.
    setback obviously plays with the ride height but so does the overall weight of the car wheelbase etc
    does it ride good now ? if so a 1 or 1 1/2 spring spacer may help get the height up without making it ride like a lumber wagon.

    I struck out at the local NAPA store. They say they don't have books that go back that far anymore. However they did point me to rareparts.com. These guys were very helpful. Their engineer was on top of things, very knowledgeable, and very willing to help. Unfortunately the springs he helped me find seem expensive, $160. I have been looking at springs for about $100. Should I just spend the money to get what appear to be what I need or is there somewhere else I should keep looking?

    Do you have the part number and or the specs for the springs he recomended??? I have some fairly good sources I could check.....

    Coil Springs

     



    I just went thru this , finding spring I like. Camaro big block spring 6314 TRW makes big block camaro sit nice. The 5370 from TRW is hevier spring. In my 73Nova 6314 gives me almost 3'' off top tire to fender lip and 5370 was little more. Wire diameter differant. 6314 - .610 and 5370 - .640

    Their are allot of differant springs. I been thru trail error part. I kept all information in book. I just tried differant spring in my Nova this week to get look I was after.

    Thanks for all the info. I may have found a spring, although I am fairly confident that I am now in the trial and error mode. I called Tamraz auto parts. They have a store on ebay. The guy I spoke to was quick with a spring because apparently another guy who works there has an award winning 70 Camaro with a 572. the springs he recommended are a MOOG part. They were only 90 bucks. Wish me luck.

    The next challenge will be installing them. I have never changed coil springs. I am pretty mechanically inclined but I have been known to break a bunch of stuff on my way to figuring out the right way to do something. Advice is always welcome.
