"Somebody told me.............". Anytime a story starts like that, get ready for misinformation.
Whoever told you that is not someone who's reached for their own wallet, and is definitely out of touch with reality. Maybe to be kind they stumbled across an out of date ad on the web, but that price is not going to happen today. One other possibility is they're confusing 5.7/6.1 Hemi's with 426 style. The latest generation of 426 Hemi came out earlier this year and raised the price $1500-2000. The one Mike linked to is about as cheap as they get today. If you've got time to wait, keep an eye on ebay. Dealers put them up all the time. If the market softens again there might be some softening of prices, but they've been hot for a couple years and with the interest in muscle cars apparently still high, don't hold your breath. BTW, shipping weight is around 700 lbs, so check on shipping costs before buying as one closer to you that is slightly higher may be a better buy once freight is factored in.
And to think that they were about a $1000 option in '68
Might try these guys.
