289 K code looking to trade!

Not looking to make a profit. I picked it up with a model A project but it's not what I really want to run and feel it would feel much more at home in a muscle car. It's a 289 Hi Po from a 67 mustang. It's missing the distributor, air cleaner, has a bent fan and has aftermarket chrome valve covers. Has original 4bbl intake and carb. Also have a C4 that with it, it may or may not be original. I'm not a mustang guru. It's been sitting for a while here in San Diego, but it turns freely. I'm looking for a flathead (running or rebuildable) but would consider anything from the 50's (Olds, early hemi, inline's are cool too). Or any Model A hot rod parts (or associated parts, like K-H wheels, 30's grill shell, F1 front brakes hubs and drums, ford 8 or 9" rear end (a narrow one for a model A). But you know what they say, cash is king, and would except a cash offer. I really hate ebay, so I'm trying not to go that route. I can get pictures and numbers on request. Thanks.

I would make an offer but shipping an engine even a short distance would be too expensive.

My advice would be to learn to love Ebay. Anything you need will show up eventually. I have found that most people who sell old car parts are honest. But you have to ask questions to be sure they haven't omitted important facts about the condition of the parts. The seller may think he's selling a good part till you tell him what to check. For example brake drums may be turned beyond the maximum diameter and look like new.

ALWAYS check the sellers feedback first. If they have a lot of negative feedback from dissatisfied buyers don't bid. Don't even email them because they can't be trusted.

I have 129 positives and one negative from a guy who didn't pay. check the feedback of the people who gave the negative feedback as they may be a real jerk who always have problems. I had two bidders with -2 feedback who didn't pay. when I gave them a negative their accounts were terminated before they could retaliate.

If they have 0 feedback or a low number an email isn't always enough. Ask for their phone number and talk to them on the phone to determine if they are genuine or full of crap.

If you buy an engine or parts car it should be close enough to San Diego so you can go look at it before you bid. If the seller doesn't want you to come see it don't bid.

If the seller wants you to send the money by Western Union it's probably a scam. If you send money by Western Union to a guy in Texas it doesn't mean that a guy in Texas will pick up the money. Anyone with a fake ID can pick up the money anywhere in the world. A postal money order is best because if they don't send the goods it's mail fraud and that's a federal offense.
There's a lot more crooks on Ebay than ever and they keep coming up with new scams so you can't be too careful. But like I said used car parts isn't a good place for scammers to make money.

I've had some success with ebay, and I used to buy stuff all the time on it for my motorcycle projects. I just don't like selling stuff on there. It's good for sellers, but it's definatley driving up the prices of everything and people don't hook up their friends like they used to :) I'm trying to keep it old school and hook someone up with a deal. But if I don't get any takers I'll feed it to the sharks (ebay) :)

I still give stuff to freinds if they can use it. But all to often they turn around and sell it.
If I have a $500 car for sale locally after a few months I might get a $300 offer. Even putting it in the Auto Hunter magazine that covers all of New England just gets me a lot of tire kickers that have to think about it or get their wife's permission. I don't remember any of them ever getting the wife's ok.
If I put it on ebay I can offer it at $500 and get $800 to $1500 by the end of the week.

On the other hand if someone bids too high for something I want to buy I let them have it. The next time one comes up that guy with more money than brains won't be bidding against me.

It definatley has it's place in the world... I just miss the days of 100 dollar grill shells and 300 dollar engines that run :) I sound like an old timer now "Back in my day I remember when A gallon of gas was a buck 25 and a movie was only 5 bucks" hahaha...

I don't happen to have any parts that you are looking for, but I do happen to have a few Ben Franklins that I wouldn't mind trading for that motor. I know of a nice little mustang that is being built in my garage on a budget and it would fit perfectly. I you have any idea how much you want for it, or you want to discuss it drop me an email. Hi, I have a complete 1953 Ford sedan, it has the flathead V8 and was running when parked here in southern New Mexico. There is some damage to the right side but there is one good door to replace one of the damaged ones. The engine is reported to have been a good runner but was starting to use oil. If you can figure a way to come and get it I will trade straight across for the 289 engine and trans. I am working on a '65 Mustang now that needs an engine -trans. The '53 has a three speed manual trans too.
