Mixing & painting with metalics

Is there something im missing here? I am painting a friends car and she decided to go with gun metal metalic. When i mixed the paint with the fancy mixing paddle on my drill it seemed like it did not want to mix, it just got kinda swirly never one consistant color, is this normal?

After i sarted spraying it did not spray on smooth, it sprayed really weird patterns. I sprayed a few coats in test spots to see if that helps, and it started looking good in those spots, so im wondering if you just have to keep coating with this stuff to get it to look good. Plus i just barrowed my buddies sata gun to see if my cheapy is also a problem.:confused::CRY:

Will do! i just went out and looked at it and it`s blended alot better as it dries, so i guess iw will sand smooth and spray some more.

Well i gotta say that the high dollar sata gun sprays way better than my cheapie lowes gun does. Looks like i have lots of sanding to do tonight, then i can spray again in the morning.

One of the problems with high metalic is you can sometimes with a blotchy or modeling effect after the paint is on. This happens when you put on wet coats and the metalic isn't applied in a uniform way. What we always did then, was turn the material down and the air pressure up a little and go back over the whole car with a uniform coat; keeping the gun at the same angle the whole time.

After you get the base looking good, then go back over it with the clear.

I have a new found respect for pro painters!!! This metalic has been kicking my behind bad!! I have sprayed it 4 times now, with tons of sanding between each coat, and i still cant get it consistant. It`s getting close, but still has flaws.

If i spray it on heavy it gets weird patterns, but if i back off on the wetness then it comes out orange peel like, real rough and dusty. I got good, mostly even coverage on the last coat, but now you can see all the stroke lines in the roof and deck lid. Oh well live and learn! After another bout with the 600 to 1000 grit ill try again.

i can not post all the thing s you must do but if you call me i will tell you alot of it

If you think it's hard now...you would have hated lacquer!!!

Sounds like either, ... not enough thinner ....or gun adjustment.

I tried lacquer on the merc, and it whipped me good!! I never did get it looking right.:CRY:

in its time lacquer was a ball ez to paint dry fast blow it on then you could clear with ppg dau 75 with dxr80 or the dupont base maker then clear it. there is better now but at the time thats all we had
