 i use acetone. wipes the paint right off. please do not use wd-40.BARB

 The paint is not the issue ....It's the old masking tape and there is a lot of it. I have seen this before but this is really bad.  Did a little digging since I've heard in the past that silicon was in WD-40, but unless Aliphatic Hydrocarbon is another name for silicon the material safety data sheets don't list silicon.
 
 Probably best not to use it near painted surfaces.

 I think I would try some Easy Off Oven Cleaner. The old sign painters would use it to remove lettering on truck doors. Another option might be to find a vinyl sign supply house and purchase some vinyl lettering remover.
