Lizard Skin on POR15

I think this might be a long post .

I have some questions on what I'm planning so her it goes, first off this is what I got so far:

Sherwin Williams Ultra700 Paint
Lizard Skin Sound and Heat Deadener

As I posted in my other topic about painting over rust I have some places that I don't think I'll be able to get at, mostly the interior like in the doors and such as well as under the frame rails mybe more.
My plan was to paint over the rust with POR15 and then spray the Lizard Skin on over that, as well as some of the interior with the self etching primer. The rep at POR15 says that I have to use their Etching Primer before I put anything else on their POR15 rust inhibiter paint. Of course I can't find that anywhere without waiting a couple of weeks for shipping. The guy at the paint store says I can spray any self etching primer over the POR15 but I wasn't sure I could trust him. So I want to know what you guys think if that would be okay or is their any other products like POR15 that I might be able to find locally.

Sean you could lightly sand the por 15, or coat over it when it just gets tacky to the touch. As far as self etching primers I would think they would work, but por 15 gets kind of slick and hard when dry. You might try experimenting on something small and see how it goes.

You know I think I was being kinda dumb, the POR15 rep. said I should use their primer so I guess I should. I heard of scuffing it but then I'm spraying about $400 worth of Lizard skin over it so I want to be sure it works. I actually found some of the primer and they threw it on the bus last night and I got a call already that it's in. Funny, one of the largest cities in Canada doesn't have any but a small town north of here has a distributer .
I bought one of those siphon feed sandblasters for $20 so I've been stripping off some of the rust, I'm gonna go get some sand today to see if it will remove the rust. I had some glass beed and some copper stuff but they don't seem to cut in very well.

Sean I had the very same problems with my blasting setup, so it's the old fashion way for me, sanding and grinding, but some stuff just doesn't come off. That's where the por 15 really is nice. It bonds like glue to rust. It doesn't like any greasy residue though. On my body panels I'm using one step rust converter, from Marhyde. It sprays on with a can and converts any residual rust to "black primer" which I think is zinc oxide. Works pretty good on my old truck. But a slow and tedious process for sure. Post some pictures as you go.

Also glad to hear you were able to find the POR primer. I bought my Metal 2 Metal online too, because I couldn't find it here over the weekend. A week later, I was at the local autopaint store(closed weekends), and noticed they sell Metal 2 metal and a lot of evercoat products, that none of the auto parts stores carry. So it takes a little longer, when I can't get in during the week to get what I want, but the guys there have been very helpfull!

Use the POR15 primer... I tried painting a 72 Charger R/T with POR15 in the trunk. Customer wanted the trunk floor and wheel wells painted red and nice to match the car. I put the etch primer on it (PPG not POR15) and it didn't stick. I told my (old) boss that we needed to use POR15 but he was too cheap of a bastard to buy it. Well he found out the hard way and spent more money in the end having to buy the correct primer.
I have heard of people getting away with non POR15 primer but I would use their primer and not take a chance. Now I was reading on the Lizard Skin about how it seals off moisture, etc (like a bed liner like Line X, Ryno, etc) so you may not need POR15 under it now that I think of it. Rust only spreads when air and moisture gets to it and that is why bed liners keep anything from rusting further since it's completely sealed layer. Now if there are parts you can't get to with the Lizard Skin then I guess you might as well go with POR15 under it...
Either way, hope this helps some and good luck. Whatever you do, dont skimp anywhere. Your already this far in with this much time and money. Skipping steps and going cheap now will cost you in the end. I might be young (only 21) but I've learned my lesson the hard way and it's taught me well.

Thanks, good advice. I found a place in a small town north of here that had it and he put it on the bus and was here the next morning before I got up. $10 shipping, I spent more than that driving around looking for it .

I decided I'm gonna take my car to get media blasted but the rails underneath will probably be unaccessible so I'll put the POR15 on there and the rest underneath is new metal. I'll see how well the interior gets done but I imagine there will be places where it needs it as well. I can always use the extra on my Jeep bumpers and rockerguards.

I'll see how it turns out and I'll be back with more questions. Don't worry about being only 21, some of the smartest people at my work are the young ones.

Sounds good. I'm not too smart haha, if I was I'd spend my money on things that make me more money instead of things that take my money lol.
BTW, you and I almost have the same name but mine is spelled Shawn. Sean is the Irish way of spelling it which is weird because my grandmother is mostly Irish hah.

Haha do I feel sorry for you... Named after Sean Connery. haha just messing! Yeah I'm into mx (freestyle mostly). I just sold my bikes a couple months ago (maybe 2 months I think) so I dont ride anymore. I need to get me another YZ or CR 250 and get back into it. I've always had a bike and rode since the age of 4. It feels weird without one. Costs too much money to race now, neighbors complain of noise, cops make me go home, neighbors complain on all the local tracks so they made the local tracks close down here, etc. NC sucks for riding, I miss Southern California.
