for those who have an eye for such things!!!!

Ok, my dumb question for the day on my 'maro.... If you were a potential buyer for the car,,,, I have some what I consider gorgeous Purple Pearl Metallic (DuPont ChromaBase) paint for the car, and would like to put some old style racing stripes on the car, big wide ones like the Shelby's had.... The car has a grey interior. Would the stripes and other accents look good in something like a dark silver to charcoal color, then maybe do the roll bars and front and rear suspension pieces in the same color.......... Or just do the usual thing and paint it Resale Red???????

PS---I have a terrible eye for color combinations.....

Since you already have the paint, try it without the stripes you could ad them later if it didn't sell. My opinion the suspension looks good black.

I'd just use red if your wanting to sell it .
For some reason every one can see themselves driving a red car/truck .
and MOST people only have oNe toy... and they've always thought of it as red . .. :LOL: ?

Interior is the light grey color.....

As for the suspension colors.....The lower control arms for the front and the 4 bar on the rear are all chrommoly tubular... The rear rod ends are polished stainless, front rod ends will be moly heims.... Maybe charcoal.... Just not a big fan of black anything on a car.... To me it always either looks like somebody is trying to hide something. I don't know....to me, black suspension components on a fendered car just lose all their definition..... Guess that really, I'm just tired of black!!!!! looks boring on a car to me!!!!

Maybe when I get the car mocked up to the stage that it's back on all four I should roll it outside, take some pics, and ask this question again.... It's a long ways from stock appearing.....

Maybe I should just do it in Resale Red and Shiny White..... but I'm trying to recover from being a redaholic!!!!!!!!!!:whacked: :whacked: :whacked:

The paint that you have would save you from buying red, unless you could use it on something later. My 55 Chevy was red and white you just can't beat those colors.

Yeah, I could always save it... It's some fairly high dollar stuff.... I've got another gallon out there, same DuPont Chroma Base that the color is called Cappucino.... kind of a goldish metallic color, really pretty. Been saving it for one of the Merc's.... Have to get my pickup finished up first and ready to sell, plus keep plugging away on Tom's coupe..... The pickup is red and white, hopefully it will sell fast, been a tough winter and need the $$$$$ to get going for the summer!!!!!

What would REALLY be great is if somebody would just buy the 'maro and tell me what color they want it painted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:LOL: :LOL: :LOL:

Dave purple with the gray accent would look good would bring the interior together with the outside .

Same i like some contrast in the suspension also thats why you see Ford engine blue under the Cpe to give it some kinda look . Takes away the bland solid look .

Bobby, I think I've just done sooooooooo much customer stuff over the years, and most wanted all their suspension and usually the entire frame done in black, some of the really daring one's wanted black metallic, I'm just flat burned out on black!!!!!! I dunno, black suspension stuff just never seems to have any definition or clarity to it..... either that or I'm more blind then I think I am!!!!!!!!:LOL: :LOL: :LOL:

I have a white 67 Nova I hope to sell so we can get a new roof; it's way over do.

Since you're asking us to put ourselves in the buyer's seat, have you thought about possibly pearl white stripes instead of charcoal? I think that white stripes on purple (if it's the purple I'm thinking of) would really grab your eye and say "LOOK AT ME....DAMMIT!!" Especially with an outline of a couple purple Chevy Bow Ties (I know you'll love that...:LOL: ;) ...) Embroidered on some white leather seats, with white interior accented in light grey. It may be kind of a pain to keep it clean; but, since you're selling it straight after completion.....

For me, in the end, I just finally couldn't resist the Corvette Millenium yellow with black stripes and interior.

Dutch, that's exactly the direction the car was going when it was going to be Jackies new toy, and powered by a big killer Ford!!!! However, her brother found her dream car for her now, so I'm just going to go chebbie in a chebbie and pedal it.... The way it is now, the interior is grey cloth....and in quite good condition with a bit of shampooing and I'm just too cheap to tie a bunch of money up on upholstery for something I'm going to sell..... A big engine and stuff like that will usually bring a good return on investment....but the average buyer has no idea just how expensive quality upholstery work is and never wants to pay the extra $$$$$$ just cuz the car has it......

I like the idea of gray or charcoal metallic suspension/chassis with the purple body. Or do the chassis in purple too, maybe a shade or 2 darker for contrast. There's a bunch of different ways to go that would look good.

Well....maybe not "green stripes" :CRY: :eek: :LOL: :LOL:

I don't have a problem with stripes to blend interior with exterior and carried over to suspension. Carry the combo into the engine compartment also. Hank

Red, blue or black if you are going to sell it. Purple WON'T sell!!!:eek: Had a prostreet 71 Nova, BBC, Tubbed, full cage, 4link, 9" rear, full interior...NICE car! Painted purple w/some mild graphics. Could NOT get rid of it, $9500 was the asking price and it was all less than 2 years old! Ended up trading for some cash, another car, and some parts. That guy had it painted red and sold it within a week of being done for $15500!!!!!!:mad: If its for sale, go subtle...

My wife says PURPLE!!! No stripes. But with the dark silver to charcoal trim.

If I was to keep it, I would go with the purple also. You have it, save the $$$

I don't like all black suspension parts, unless I'm trying to blend it in, to hide it.

Yeah, just having a gallon of the purple stuff already gives a lot of points in it's favor vs. buying more paint!!!! Stuff is really getting expensive!!!!

Is the purple a dark shade or a light shade , inbetween shade?

Is it more to the red side or blue side of purple ?

Charcoal goes with just about any color :) if its a real dark purple , then a bright to a mid silver will look good , 2 darks IMO doesnt look right .


But with painting it purple will limit the people to buy it . The tried and true colors , Red , Black , Silver , White , and Blue appeals to many , orange , yellow , green , gold , Brown appeal to another select few , People that like Purple walk to a different beat all together ........ LOL , Like me , My every day driver is a Purple Pearl 1999 Toyota Tacoma Pre Runner I purchased new , one look at it on the show room floor I had to have it :)

So I will trade you 2 Iwata LPH-400 LV & LVB paint guns for the camaro when its done ;) ;) ;) Heck I'll even throw in my Iwata W-400 Lv2 gun to sweeten the pot ........LOL

Well, in the can it's kind of a medium to light Purple, appears to have a lot of metallic and a decent amount of pearl in it.... Next time I'm out there I'll remember to get the color number and name off the can..... It's DuPont Chromabase, so I would imagine the color would be easy enough to adjust a bit, then of course the color of the base would probably change it, too.......

Heck, I've got so many mods on the body now that I've pretty much limited my market as much as it could be limited!!!! It's a cinch none of the Camaro purists would ever consider buying it!!!!!:LOL: :LOL: :LOL:

Friend of mine was over for a bit today (til his wife caught up with him), sez he's going to stop by tomorrow... He's a younger fella, but has a good eye for design. Try to put some sort of plan together for a grille and headlight surrounds......

I think tinting it with the right toners will be alright , just be careful of not turning it muddy ;) that is if your not happy with the shade it is now .
A Dark to Mid Charcoal will go good with a light to mid purple shade .

With no remark on my paint gun offer , you must be thinking it over ;) :)

Yeah, I looked at some very nice mid range charcoals, found a Chrysler one with about the same about of metallic in it....

Should just get the jambs or something ready and spray a shot of the purple to see what it looks like, probably beats the heck out of a lot of guessing, huh?????

I bet I know just which chrysler charcoal you are thinking , its a coarse high metallic , I use it under my Kandies alot , with all that flake it sure makes Kandys POP :)

I usually do a spray out on a 12"x12" panel with my color then mask off for a few color selections for stripes , then clear it and polish it , take it out side and see which ones I like .

Having a mix bank at work helps too ;) I get to play mad paint scientist :LOL: :eek: :D

Probably the same charcoal, nice looking color!!!!

In simpler terms, there are a couple reasons that go hand-in-hand with the red-white combo.

Psychologically, red is an "excitement color". Being one of the basic colors, it is also "classic" in feeling. If you were buying a Camaro, aren't those the feelings you want from the car?

Purple is an "exotic color", and also can seem "feminine". That is probably NOT what they are looking for.

You will find at least three times more buyers for the red car.

The goldish shades suggest "value". That is not a bad image for resale.....but I would bet on the red color, and Z28 stripes.

A final thought....If it's a keeper, do what will make you happy. If it is mechandise....paint it red.

How about that light grey interior though??? Seeing as how it is going to be for resale (well, maybe a weekend or two to play with the kids first). I really don't want to spend a bunch of money and time getting upholstery redone.....??????

Red and grey will work great together!!! (purple nova had medium grey interior), but I have seen SEVERAL rods and musclecars go with grey interiors and have red, black, blue, even yellow, outside... I've got a 98 Chevy pick up with grey interior, dark green outside. When I get to paint it, it will be candy green metallic and silver tu-tone, with grey interior.
Grey is a universal color, not as usable as black, but close. As I said before and Hotrod said, if its a keeper, put the purple on it (cuz it probably WOULD become a keeper with purple on it :eek: ) if you want to sell it, paint it what the general populas would accept, RED...or black, blue or even white. "Off" colors are a hard sell...

That's why I use this forum... I've got a lousy eye for color combos, good to hear from the pro guys that grey is ok with resale red... Probably just save the purple for my next keeper... Thanks for the help. This old 'maro is all about resale, got to get some serious $$$$$ together so I can get some goodies ordered for the Ranchero this summer!!!!!

Dave on the nose I'm kinda seeing a 68-69?? RS type of grill and headlights. You'll have to excuse my ignorance on Camaro's I don't know one year from the rest sorry. But that's the feel I get looking at your pic's. Tought call on color. Maybe if you can photoshop some different colors and see what you like. I do like the purple but like others have said it might limit your prospects. But being a one off custom I can see the purple working. If you choose stripes maybe something like a ghost stripe type of thing. Maybe none at all. As a Ford guy I like those loud blazin dual stripes. But they are not for everyone. :3dSMILE: Pretty impressive work on that car tho!!! I quietly follow along watching your progress. ;) Nice job!!.

Well G, the 'maro was kind of a strange build for me too!!!!! Was going to be Jackie's, then her brother came up with the Charger she really wanted so I ended up with the 'maro.... Probably wouldn't sell real well with the big Windsor I was going to put in it, either!!!!!:LOL: Think I'll just get the body in primer, finish putting the suspension on the car and set it outside for some pictures, then reopen this one and ask the color questions again...... With so little of the car actually being shown in the pics cuz of my dinky little garage it's tought to tell!!!!

If it was a stock body , sure a more subtle color would be choice , but customs arent subdued at all , Lay that funky purple pearl on it !!! With some SS type stripes , it will look good , You can never go wrong with SS style stripes .

Basic black sells, unless it's summer time. Then red will be even more in demand! I like the fat white stripes idea. Anyone who likes performance will be attracked to it immediately. If there is no difference in cost, go for whatever color you want to highlight the suspension. I'd keep the purple for one of your own projects, or maybe your ex's Challenger! When ever I've sold a car, the red ones went the fastest. Purple is for the more descerning buyer(they'll pay more, but they are hard to find, and they are looking for a specific car) Red gets the testosterone going in most teenagers, and Black has that sinester look that also appeals to people wanting a fast car. Post some picks of it primered, and we'll ask someone like Denny to render it in different colors. That was a big help with me, on my house and car!:D

I think I'll just hold off on making any decisions til I get the suspension built then roll it outside for some pics..... Sure do miss my big shop sometimes, in my little garage, just can't get back far enough to really eyeball everything let alone get any good pics of it.... Not sure G.... Think it's old enough for some slotted aluminum wheels??? I've got a set, 15X10's for the back and 14X6's for the front.... Probably a bit too nostalgic for an '82, huh????

I've also looked online at some of the newer style Camaro and Vette wheels done up in a charcoal color with a polished outer lip.... I don't know.... My eye is no better and picking out wheel and tire combo's then it is picking out color combos!!!!!!!!

Dave, have you considered using a maroon paint? This should match up well with your interior color. There are several nice maroons on late model stuff such as the Dodge pickups. Just a suggestion. I have had experience with purple and you may find that a buyer is very difficult to find. The paint savings may come back to bite you in the behind. If this thing is for sale and you need to turn it quickly, put the purple back on the shelf and wait for the right project. Just my opinion.
